Smoke Alarms

  1. Started by MRServices,

I am doing some maintenance for a local pub and have noticed gaps between the pub and accommodation above. The accommodation isn't let out and is only used by the manager and his family. Do they need fire protection between the two? Should the alarm be extended upstairs or just sounders? The stairs are separated at the bottom and don't go through the pub. Thanks in advance

In an open plan studio unit, located within a new block of flats, is a heat detector or smoke detector to be installed please? Also, is fire detection in common parts only regulated by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order? Thanks

Are there any fire detection products which would be suitable for a commercial garage. The garage maintains diesel trucks.

  4. Sorry for the poor photo, and it's definitely a heat detector, but I'm trying to determine if this there are any differences between Pt1 and Pt6 detectors and, if so, where this one fits? Also, the manufacturer would be helpful because, although I've seen loads of them in situ, I can't find photos of them online. Thank you ?

Hi, I have 2 Ei 144 alarms in my house and one of them is beeping every minute or so. The one that is not beeping has a green light, while the one that does beep does not, it only flashes the red light every once in a while. I checked the fuse box and all the switches are up. I tried resetting them but still no green light. Not sure if this would be related: I recently (2 days ago) triggered the alarm, I accidentally burnt a bit of newspaper on the cooker but nothing major, put it out immediately. The alarm would have been detected by the detector that is now beeping. The alarm was blaring for about 5 minutes then it stopped all by itself. I did press the Test &…

I have an Ei134 smoke alarm fitted in my flat which is beeping away merrily. I assume it’s a low battery warning so I’m trying to take it apart and replace the battery. Can’t take it apart for the life of me. Instructions on the outside say to ‘release clip and rotate’. I’ve found videos for later models where the clip is on the opposite side to the hinge (which makes sense) and just needs the clip pulling out and the alarm opens up. (Later models use a screw driver to open but this doesn’t look like one of those). Anyone remember the 134 and the trick to open it up? Thanks in advance.

I’ve recently replaced a smoke alarm EI151tl and only at nights it started to beep every ten minutes or so. Why is this happening

we moved into our house 6 months ago. The house is 7 years old and fitted with 3 Ei141 detectors. One of them sporadically beeps, often just once, occasionally several times and then stops. This usually but not always happens early morning which is annoying. I read that it might be to do with the temperature affecting the battery, is this the likely cause? An additional issue is that the alarm causing the problem is situated in the upstairs ceiling above a void so is impossible to get to without a very long ladder (20 foot plus), this seems bad planning by the builder. Can anyone suggest how we could deal with this alarm without having to get external help which wil…

I have a flat in Scotland that we rented out for the first time over a year or so ago. The flat has a hardwired set of three smoke and one heat detector. The smoke detectors are Ei141's from memory and I can't remember what the heat detector is. When we let the flat I replaced all detector heads that might be close to the replacement date which is displayed by the small label on the side of the heads themselves. They all run comfortably into the 2020's now. However two of the ceiling mounted base plates appear to have dates on too, whilst the remaining too don't, which suggest they need replacing too? I had thought the quick mounting heads meant that lay…

Hi, I have 3 Ei141 units hard wired in my house. The alarm sounded a short burst in the middle of the night. The unit in my bedroom now has a constant green light and a double red flash every 30 seconds or so. Any ideas of what’s up?

Hi there, I am looking to replace a couple of aico ei150 with ei166 smoke alarms. I have 2 blue wires, 1 brown and 1 white. I just wanted to know what I do with the 2nd blue wire. Thanks.

  12. What a wonderful forum! I hope you can help. I have recently had a home lift installed for my husband who has Alzheimers and is losing his sight. After installation, the building inspector from out local council said that we had to have jointly wired smoke alarms upstairs and downstairs. At the moment we have battery operated ones. While I do not question his recommendation, I was unaware that private homes had to have smoke alarms fitted. The inspector said that building regulations required that we change to hard wired. I cannot find the legislation setting out this requirement. Could you advise please.

Hi this morning my two smoke alarms went off first the upstairs one and then after I pushed the "hush" button and went downstairs, opened the hall door, looked around for signs of fire, about 5 mins later both upstairs and downstairs went off again. They are model Ei 141, I'm not sure if they are interconnected or not. Can this model do that? There is no sign of fire or smoke anywhere on the house. The hush button would not work on the downstairs one so I have had to remove the unit completely. I have noticed they both needed replacing in July 2016 so have ordered replacements from you. I'm just concerned as to why both would go off together and I'm missing something…

Hi, we changed the batteries in both our interlinked Kidde Firex KF10s, as one was giving us the chirp every 30 seconds or so - the other one was fine. We followed the instructions, changed both batteries and then tested the batteries afterwards. Both beeped as they should have, but when the mains was reconnected the red light continues to flash red on both devices, and no green light is displayed. The only thing I can find in the User Manual about this red light every 10 seconds is that the device is in Hush mode and should come out of it in about 10 minutes. An hour later, still no green light on eitherr device, just a red light every 10 seconds. Can you please adv…

Hi, I have 2 1151 smoke alarms. They both have the green L E D showing so mains power is connected. There is also an intermittent red L E D flashing and they are beeping every few minutes. Both units were fitted by a professional electrician and are around a year old. Please can you advise how I can stop the units beeping as noone in the house will get any sleep tonight. Many Thanks

I wonder if you could help me? When I turn the electricity supply off and back on again the smoke alarm continuously beeps, this happens every time. The model number is shown below Smoke alarm hush Ei151TL I would be grateful for any advice

  19. One of my ei141 started beeping - so had to remove it from base. I will only be able to change the battery and place it back on the ceiling after a week or so, so the electricity supply for all other alarms is now also off. Can I turn it on (otherwise other alarms will start beeping soon without main supply) - when one of the alarms is not on the base?

I notice some commercial premises fitted with domestic type (BS5839-6) smoke alarms, surely this is not acceptable from an insurance prospective? I can understand if a FRA deems it low risk, say in a small open plan shop and deemed an early warning device such as the above would be acceptable or can they simply not be used in a commercial premises. Thank you for your advice.

  21. I have 7 x Ei141 and 1 x Ei144 in my home, the system was installed 9 years ago. I realise that it's coming up to the time to think about replacement. A couple of days ago I had a nuisance alarm, one alarm was sounding for about 5-10 seconds. Later in the day it happened again and a couple of alarms were sounding. About 10 minutes after that it happened again and about 3 alarms were sounding, always about the same amount of time and stopping without me pressing the hush button. As I am a senior citizen on my own, I phoned my son and he advised switch off at the fuse box, and because the batteries were only changed a few months ago then the alarms would be fine. …

Hi, I am concerned about whether the decibel levels im currently getting at the bedhead are too high. Im currently getting just over 100db, so am wondering if there is a maximum level stated anywhere, that is considered to be too high? Im sure i read this somewhere but cant seem to find it. We are only required to achieve 85db at the bedhead. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi All I have a question for which I am nearly sure of but here goes. What is the recommended frequency of mains wired smoke detection in communal areas of residential blocks (without alarm panel etc etc) I am sure that they are also recommended to have some sort of maintenance program i.e visual checks, pushing the test button, but is there a requirement to actually annually check them? ??

  25. Started by gillybean6664,

Hi We live in apartments, we own our flat. In recent months the communal fire alarm keeps going off, it says its coming from our flat, but no smoke alarm has gone off. We requested each time with the maintainance company there is a fault and it needs looking at, they would keep resetting it which never fixed it. They also accused us of setting it off on purpose. A new company has taken over (managing it on behalf of the previous maintenance company) we have since had a letter saying because there has been three call outs we would be charged. But how can we be charged when we have said there is a fault? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
