Hi I have a fireplace (stove) in the living room that always had some smoke problems, for the last 10 years...However after warm up it has proved to work well. Never have smoke after heating. This season starts to make smoke at night, after we go to sleep and this is a problem. Until i succeed to solve this I need a smoke alarm, no a heat alarm but a smoke alarm to alert me if during the night this happens...some suggestions? Thanks in advance and sorry about poor English.

Hi, I recently had a smoke alarm fitted by an electrician. It may not be relevant, but as he fitted it, I noticed that he chopped a few wires. It is only one or two months and was 'apparently a new smoke alarm, but the green led light that was always on, has switched off, the red led still flashes occasionally. I wondered if this was serious, or something which I need to fix. . ? many thanks for your time.

Hi All I have purchased an EI156 as a replacement for a EI150 and it has two extra wires that are not shown in the wiring diagrams. The power block wiring is the same between the two units but there is an orange and purple wire which are not mentioned. Do these need to be wired in? Thanks

My alarm keeps sound every 15 minutes I keep having to press the hush button to stop it also I have noticed that there is no green light present compared to a second one I have upstairs. My understanding is this may be an AC connection problem or a battery problem. How can I fix this otherwise this will go on all night.

Hi, I hope you can help with this weird situation! We have two smoke alarms which are wired up to the electrics with battery back-ups also inside, one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. (Can't see any branding on them.) The one at the top of the stairs started beeping. I disconnected it and we've been using a portable battery-only one for a while instead. When that one started beeping to indicate the battery was running out (and it's a FireAngel which says battery not replaceable), that was my prompt to sort the top of the stairs one. So I bought a new back-up battery for that today, taking care to buy the exact one it recommends on the alarm itse…

Hi I have a small, self contained, single storey shop 70m2, built in the 1960's, which contains a front shop area and 3 No. small rooms which are used for storage and office space. There is also a cloakroom and kitchenette. The shop is staffed by myself and usually one other person. We will generally have a maximum of three customers in the shop at any one time. I have carried out a Risk Assessment based upon the HM Government Fire Risk Assessment Document and Part B of the Building Regulations and have determined that I need 3 No. smoke alarms. What I have been unable to find out is whether the alarms need to be mains fed, or whether I can install 10 yr battery …

Hi there, I live in a block of flats. I lease from the owner, but the building seems to be run by a property management company (RMG). When changing the battery of the smoke detector in my flat I noticed a sticker that says 'replace by 2013' on the actual detector. The detector is also wired to the mains. The smoke detector is the same as many in the corridors of the building. Some have actually been replaced but not all. I would assume most old ones have that same sticker and replacement date on them. Who is responsible for changing all of these? Should I be contacting the owner of my flat or the property management company? Thanks, Jocelyn

Hi, I am a university undergraduate psychology student currently studying the development of the fire and carbon monoxide systems currently available on the market. I am looking to understand the psychological attachments people have with detection systems, and looking at theoretical ways to improve the user interaction with those systems. If you could take 10 minutes out of your time to complete these two surveys, it would greatly help my research. The first survey is simple and only has 5 questions. The second survey is known as a Kansei engineering survey, and concentrates on the emotional attachments we have to the shape and form of different alarm systems. Thank y…

Hi there, About 5 days ago the smoke alarm in our kitchen started emitting a beep every 30-40 seconds. Having done research I found out that this might indicate low battery power. On dismantling the alarm I discovered that it operates with lithium cells that can't be replaced. The unit was due to be replaced in March 2014 anyway so I ordered 2 replacements Ei164RCEK which are the ones that don't require an electrician to replace them. I replaced both the kitchen one and the hall one last night, turned the power back on and both tested and reset the alarms. But the kitchen one still beeps every 30-40 seconds! I thought it might just need to charge up but it's been …

Could you kindly advise on the type of smoke alarms most suitable for use in a log cabin, with a kitchen dinning area, 11metres by 3metres heated by a wood burning stove. The single bed room is mains wired for interconnection with the alarm to be installed in the kitchen dinning area. Thank you, Dave

Hi I'm currently undergoing some renovation work to a two story-3 floored property, ground floor single occupancy with bedroom, kitchenette/lounge and shower room.. First floor dual occupied 2x bedsit, communal kitchen, laundry and shower room.. Second floor same as ground floor.. Would it be acceptable to install mains powered smoke/heat detectors x 4 individual units as would be the norm, then install the same type of system interlinked through communal areas or would communal need a fire alarm system with call points, zoned panel etc.. We need to know as to work to legislation.. Many thanks in advance Wes

Hi there I have the following alarms that I purchased from Safelincs 5 months ago. The alarm models are: 1. Carbon Monoxide Firex 4985 2. Firex Ioisation 4881 3. Firex Ionisation 4870 4. Firex Optical 4985 All has been ok but suddenly the alarm beeps once every 10 minutes. I have cleaned all the alarms and changed the backup battery on one of them that allows you to replace the battery. All alarms are wired into the electrical circuit. Does anyone have any advice as to why this is happening and what I can do to stop it. Thanks in advance. Dan

I am a student at Worthington Kilbourne High School and I am in an engineering class and my group is looking into potential problems with current smoke detector design. Part of our research is a survey component so we would like to know: Would you test your smoke alarms more often if they could be tested remotely?

Have Aico Ei141 - 2 smoke alarms mains connected with back up batteries. One downstairs in hall and one upstairs in hall. One downstairs was beeping so assumed needed new battery. Eventually put in new battery but had trouble removing the base of the alarm to refit new battery. Put back on and reconnected to the mains supply - we have a special switch for smoke alarms on our fuse box. Every time put on mains alarm upstairs goes off very loudly, indicating a fire. I have tried cleaning and hoovering dust from both units, but does not work. Any ideas. I have ordered a replacement base for our downstairs alarm in case faulty.

We have 2 smoke detectors, one upstairs and one downstairs, both on landings. They are Ei141 mains with battery. The downstairs one was beeping and driving us insane so we presumed the battery needed changing. The smoke alarms are 5 years of age as were fitted into new build property by the builders and house is nearly 5 years old. With great difficulty and after watching your video, we changed the battery in the down stairs smoke alarm after turning off the mains. We had an extremely difficult time trying to remove the bottom part of the alarm, which housed the battery and I could not remove it and my husband is a bit heavy handed, but managed eventually to remove w…

I am just setting up as a mobile disco and am concerened about using smoke machines and setting off smoke alarms. Is there any way I can use my smoke machine depending on what type of alarms are fitted or will the smoke trigger all alarms? Many would just say, don't use the smoke machine but it gives a venue atmosphere and customers are not very happy if I have not been able to provide them with what they would class as an atmospheric disco event.

Hi there I hope someone can help me. I purchased 4 alarms for my property recently via Safelinc's website. My electrician has installed them over the weekend. However we have the following issue: When you press the test button on the Carbon monoxide alarm the carbon monxide alarm goes off (but no alarm sound is heard on the other 3 connected smoke alarms). This seems starnge given that when you test any of the 3 smoke alarms, an alarm sound can be heard on the carbon monoxide alarm. Is this meant to be like this? The alarm models are: 1. Carbon Monoxide Firex 4985 2. Firex Ioisation 4881 3. Firex Ionisation 4870 4. Firex Opt…

We are an installation company mainly involved in the installation of residential electrical equipment including security systems and smoke alarms / systems. We have a number of customers that have security alarms with smoke heads attached. We have in the past specified security systems with smoke heads attached. I am trying to determine when it is acceptable to add a smoke sensor / or heat sensor to a security alarm? I have just extracted the following link which has added to my confusion (see abstract par 3). Is it BS 5839-6 that contains the information. Once I have established when (if at all) this scenario can be used/specified I would also like t…
