  2. We have mains operated interlinked (but not wireless) smoke detectors on the landing on 3 floors of a 3 storey house. We want to add mains operated smoke detectors in 3 bedrooms on the top 2 floors and a mains operated heat detector in the kitchen on the ground floor. We want to interconnect them to the existing system. Can we do it with wireless detectors? Or would we need to replace the existing detectors with wireless ones? And will we be able to link the mains power to the lighting circuits in the bedroom, so as to avoid having to cut entire new channels in all the ceilings? I don't know what brand the exising detectors are - they have a logo that looks like a d…

Until we had a home safety visit from the London Fire Brigade we only had one smoke detector previously. But they could only fit two ionization 10 year sealed battery life mini smoke detectors for free. And stupidity mum choose the converted loft instead of replacing the ancient smoke detector in the downstairs hall. At least the upstairs hall now has one, as there was nothing there before. The ancient smoke detector which is a First Alert round type off-white creamy colour. Not sure of it's age but I reckon around 15 years old or older. As we moved into the house over 11 years ago and it was there from the previous people, but still surpisingly working …

I am trying to figure out what kind of smoke alarm I should buy. I live in a flat but was thinking it would be good to get one that is somehow linked to all the flats that are in the house. Are they more effective than individual alarms?

We have got a customer that has a very old fire alarm system installed and when we carried out a recent service it was noted that the system did not comply with the latest British standards and we have recommended the site be up graded. For example the existing cable is not fire rated and also has no detection throughout. The customer has asked that because the install is over 20 years old, would we not compare it to the standards from when it was installed. I said that we would always work to the latest standards and therefore we would need to install a complete new system but i was just after some clarity to be sure?

I have just surveyed a small office comprising of ground and 1st floor. There are 3 offices on the ground floor, a flight of stairs to 1st floor, and 2 offices upstairs. Could I install a type D fire alarm system to cover the dwelling, ie: a mains from an MCB in twin earth, then link the heads as required. I would cover each office with s/heads and fit 3 to the staircase as there is a dogleg half way up

What are the guide lines/legisation on fire alarm warning lights (visiual alarms) signage? We have been told that our signs are the wrong colour, at the moment they are green with writting and we have been told they have to be red with white writing. I was under the ilustion that they were green because they were for infomation and that the beacon was the warning, could you please clarify for us. rob

Can you tell me the time interval for testing our fire alarm under the requirements of BS 5839 (2011). We test weekly alternating the testing points throughout our pavilion and we have an annual test of our extinguishers. We also had the fire alarm control box and emergency lights tested 6 months ago. However our contractor believes that the box and lights have to be tested on a 6 monthly basis. We checked with our Fire Authority Fire Prevention Officer and he said that he believed the test requirement to be 12 monthly. As the regulation seems to be constantly updated could you please advise me how often we need to test? It's only £45 cost but as we are a charity we wan…

Hi Can multi-sensor alarms (optical and heat eg Ei2110) be used in kitchens? I know they are super sensitive while not having false alarms, but can I use them everywhere? Thanks

We want to install smoke detectors in our timber stables. The alarm must sound away from the stables eg a bell inside and outside our house.

My parents do not currently have a smoke alarm at their house, because the one they had was in their kitchen and went off every time they cooked. Obviously they know this is not safe, and it worries me as well. I would like someone’s advice as to the type of alarm most appropriate to fit. Their house is very small, so one alarm would be enough for them to hear from every room.

I had 2 smoke alarms fitted by the local fire officers about 5 years ago and 2 of them are now beeping regularly. It says that the batteries are not removable so I don't really know what to do next?

My elderly mother tends to leave the gas cooker switched on which is bad when the flame of the cooker is sometimes extinguished. This allows explosive gas to pour into the kitchen. Is there anything we can do to switch off the gas automatically when there is too much gas? Surely this must be a common problem!

Hi Folks I use a Deafguard smoke alarm (purchase proof attached) which is displaying an Error 2 when I test the alarm. Unfortunately I do not have the instructions to hand. Can you please advise the corrective action for this, if any? If it needs servicing can I bring it in? I live in Lincoln. Many Thanks D.G
