Smoke Alarms

    Started by Guest Rebecca,

I have two Deta 1163 smoke alarms. One is upstairs and the other one downstairs. I have changed the batteries and tested both of them and they are working. The one downstairs shows a constant green light only and the one upstairs displays a constant green light plus a flashing red light with no noise. Is it correct for them to be different as I think they are conected or is one of them not working.

My wireless smoke alarm sent me a very brief smoke detection notification and the alert ended just as abruptly. Have 3 in the house and no other alarms have gone off and that one went to a “alarm ended” “no smoke detected” status. Should we be concerned? She’s racing out there right now

Hi everyone, hope all is well.. before I go out and spend a chunk of money, I just wanted to sanity check the solution I have put together myself- I am not a qualified person hence reaching out here 😀 I live in a 7 year old 3 storey house- the smoke/ co2 alarms are the same age as the house and ideally need to be changed out for new. I currently have a deta co2 alarm in the kitchen, and in each hallway on the ground / first and second floor I have smoke/ co2 alarms which are all hardwired and interconnected.. On the second floor this is where the airing cupboard exists and the boiler exists in the kitchen… what I was thinking about doing was to purchase 3…

I've got a house that has two Ei151 smoke alarms wired in. They are expiring now and I'd like to replace them. I can see that the Ei156 might be a good option because it looks like it would fit on the same base with the same wiring. However, I would really rather have the newer model Ei140 series. How difficult is it to swap over to the new model? I assume just screw in a new bracket and the wiring will be the same, probably using the same connector?

Hi, I am wondering if it is possible/safe to supplement a single, mains (electricity) powered smoke alarm with a battery powered smoke alarm in another room. I have read that it is unsafe to mix two mains-powered smoke alarms and just want to check that it is safe to mix one mains-powered & one battery-powered smoke alarm. Thanks!

  7. Hi I'm trying to find out if there is any guidance to reference on the proximity of ceiling fans adjacent to automatic smoke detection, and if there is the potential for either false activations or probably more importantly, the potential of the fan keeping smoke away from the detector. I have read the general rule of thumb (minimum 3 feet distance from the fan) but can anyone direct me to where this is stated please if possible. Thank you

Hi All I have assessed a shop with a smoke detector in the basement. Currently the basement zone is disabled due to unwanted fire signals caused by damp. The basement is sterile and has sixty minute separation from the shop floor above. Should I advise the client to: Remove the smoke detector Fit a heat detector instead Or just make a note of the disablement in my findings. Thanks

I am thinking about having solar panels and I am going to have the inverter and battery in the loft. Does a fire alarm there have to be hard wired or can I use one with a 10 year battery.

Hi I manage a converted house of three stories with a basement. It was converted pre-1991 so may not have adequate compartmentation. Which guide do I use regarding fire precautions, is it the LACORS guide? Currently there is a BS 5839 Part 4 Alarm panel installed with one detector on the top floor and Manual call points on each floor...will this need improving as the LACORS guide recommends: Grade A LD2 in the common areas with a heat detector in each flat and a Grade D LD3 Non interlinked alarm in each flat?

  12. My smoke alarm chirps intermittently. I've changed the battery several times, reset the alarm several times, cleaned it several times as well. the one thing that stops it is increasing the thermostat temperature. It seems that when it gets below 73 degrees in the house (i'm assuming it only happens during the winter), the alarms starts chirping. I turn the thermostat up to 74 and in about 20 min it stops. this time i've turned it up to 75 and it stopped for a minute and now it does two short beeps every 25 or so seconds. the house was built in 2017. Any suggestions?

Hi, all I am hoping someone here can help. We have an Ei168 Optical Smoke Alarm fitted to the ceiling of our upstairs landing. It was installed in the last six months. Last night, the unit started beeping at regular intervals. This morning, I pressed what I took to be the test button for roughly 20-30 seconds. The alarm did not sound when I did this, but the beeping stopped (so that, at least, is a relief). There is now an amber light flashing every sixty seconds (roughly). Does anyone have any advice as to what the problem might be? I have read a couple of other posts, but the description of the problems faced in those seems slightly different to t…

Hi, My Ei 151TL alarm required replacing as the 10 year date came to an end. I bought the alternative alarm as the Ei 151TL is no longer avaliable. I can see the new alarm Ei161e the wires have to be disconnected from the plug socket and re-wired directly into the alarm base. The four wires currently coming though the celing are live, battery, interconnect & neutral. My only question is what do i do with the battery wire for the new alarm Ei161e? As the Ei161e only has live, interconnect & neutral. Rob

I live in a rental property and have Ei Optical Smoke Alarms installed in each room - not sure which model but our manual covers the Ei3024/3016/3014. The RF Module LED indicator on one of the alarms is flashing red twice quickly at 3/4-second intervals, with no sound coming from it. We've looked at the manual and can't see any answers there - all other alarm units are as normal, with a solid green light. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

We have three mains powered EI161 smoke detectors. Very occasionally (less than once a year) the one in our bedroom has given a very short (about two seconds) alarm noise in the middle of the night. It then stops and nothing else happens. Last night it did this three times, the second about 5 minutes after the first and the third about an hour later. Also one of the other alarms in the house gave a similar short alarm noise immediately before the one in our bedroom. Any ideas please?

  19. Hello. One of the Kidde Firex 4618AC detectors in our home false-alarmed at 6AM Monday morning a week ago. It was a full alarm, all detectors screeching and a voice saying "Fire" periodically. After about 30 to 40 seconds they went silent. The blinking red light indicated it was the alarm in my bedroom. The air was extremely still there; with the milder autumn temps, neither heating nor cooling had occurred during the night, and the detector location is somewhat shielded from air motion. Then yesterday our fridge failed apparently due to a coolant leak. I would like to know if the two things could be related. I know, I know, flush the toilet and the lights go out, right?…

  20. I have an old, hard-wired smoke detector that has a battery backup. The wires to the power are cut, and it does not have a battery, yet in complete darkness, it emits a faint green light. My first inclination was that the detector contained a hidden camera and the light is coming from the IR emitter, however my cell phone camera does not detect any IR. Does anyone have an explanation? Do LED's act as capacitors? This is a 60's or 70's model detector.

Hi, anybody had problems with alarm going off 2 or 3 blasts at a time? I’ve changed batteries..

  23. Please can anyone give us some advice? Grade D1/D2 alarms - do they have to be mains powered (with battery back up) or can they be 10-year, sealed, lithium battery powered only? BS5839-6 seems to suggest that they must be mains powered in some way with options for battery back-up depending on D1/D2. But can wireless radio-linked devices suffice as a suitable alternative in the guidance?

Smoke alarm, beeped 9 times then stopped for 1.5hours then again in the night. It was torture! Is this meaning replace battery’s? Green light is on and red light flashes twice every 40 secs.

Hi, We have two BRK 670 MBX smoke alarms connected together in our hallway and landing; one up one down. We've been in the house for 8 months and the alarms were manufactured in 2016, so are 6 years through their 10 year life. I recently replaced the batteries and reset both alarms. But still, the downstairs alarms beeps 3 times every 25 minutes, followed quickly by one beep of the upstairs alarm. (Weather conditions are warmer than usual today, but it only started at 9pm.) Help appreciated, thank you
