Fire Doors and Accessories

  1. Evening all, We are currently installing some new fire door sets and carrying out fire door remidals on a live scheme. While carrying out remidal work to the glazing / beading overhauls. We found that the glazing had been done after install and a router has been used on the corners leaving small circular gaps. What would be the appropriate way to close this off?? 1. Intumescent Sealant 2. Blue 60 foam 3. Envirograph FR filler Should the fire consultant not offer guidance on the best practice in this instance as we have recommended to change the whole door??? Thankyou Matt

  3. I am working in an old listed building, previously used as a GP surgery, that is now being renovated into an office building. The building has two floors and a basement. There are three fire exits on the ground floor and an external wooden staircase from the first floor. As the building is listed the council are requesting to keep the internal doors as they are, however I feel FD30(S) fire doors should be considered. However, I cannot find any legislation that provides a detailed explanation of when and where fire doors are required. The building is medium sized with 4 offices on the ground floor and four offices and a kitchen on the first floor. It seems excessive to req…

Afternoon My client has asked for a fire door survey to be completed the following criteria and I believe this would be easier using a proprietary software To be able to categorise each door into one of the following for budgetary purposes Life Cycle Repair Malicious Damage Maintenance Ability to add budgetary costs to each door or repair The software creates a database allowing all of the 1-3 criteria above to be reviewed, including the budgetary costs The ability to add photographs and expand them if possible A monthly cost would be preferred Does anyone use any software like this currently, as I have looked at a fe…

I have been asked to quote to replace existing Dorma floor springs ( which are not fire rated) fitted to double cross corridor FD 30 & 60 Sapele faced polished doors all with vision panels to a College in Birmingham after a regulation visit by a Fire Inspector He has suggested we fit 3no 100mm fire hinges to the doors Our problem is the swing doors open both ways and the edges of the doors have been curved in manufacture to allow the doors to swing freely, so we cannot fit standard fire hinges without cutting off the curved edges on the hanging side to both doors. We could fit a 15mm hardwood strip to the hanging side & fit the required fire hinges.…

Hi, What is the maximum gap legally allowed between the wall and the fire door frame? A few of us leaseholders went collectively to get our front doors replaced and mine was done yesterday. I was reluctant at first due to the reduction in width of the new door compared to my previous door but I was convinced that there would be 1-2 cms max gap. But when the frame was installed yesterday I was shocked to find the gap of approx 2 inches on one side and more than 1 inch on the other sides. The gap has been filled with fire retardant foam. I also noticed that the door frame is actually more than 12mm narrower than what was mentioned in the final speci…

Hi team, a bit of advice please. I have a number of fire doors on my site which are all listed on my fire diary. As one of the doors is the front door of a residents premises we have been requested to provide a Fire Door Inspection certificate. Looking at the The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 its states that the the inspection can be conducted by a competent person. Having completed by GradIOSH including completion of the NVQ Lv3 Fire Safety I feel this satisfies competent?? Looking at the training objectives of the fire door inspectors course, this is all information I am well versed with, therefore should be able to sign the door off with confidence - …

Good evening all...I have recently been to look at some fire door remidals and would wish to put my mind at ease regarding repair works. Am I correct in thinking that if there is no damage to the door and only damage to the Vveneer a repair is acceptable as this has no effect on the performance of the doorset. Thanks in advance.

Hi there, I'm currently working on a project in West London where we are adding an additional story to a house by converting the loft space into habitable space. This off course means also changing all doors to 30min fire doors. On the ground floor however there is a beautiful original timber door (currently external door, but with kitche side return extension it is going to be internal) that my clients would love to keep. It it about 70% timber and 30% glass. Is there any way of upgrading this door to be 30min fire proof? Many many thanks,

Note sure if this is the right part of the forum would appreciate some views. My organisation is about to upgrade electronic access control systems to a newer model and the matter of BS EN 13637 compliance has arisen. We have traditionally ensured BS EN 179 and BS EN 1125 are met and plan to continue deploying compliant mechanical escape systems such as break glass units, request to exit buttons, panic bars and fail safe mode on all internal doors in the event of a fire alarm activation. Our supplier is now trying to recommend we install electronic escape systems such as as ePED which can allow time delay on some of these doors. The conundrum is that…

Hi all, is anyone a member of the FDIS? I have now completed the FDIS Diploma and FDIS Transition module, however one of the videos explains that it is a requirement of becoming FDIS certified is to enter all fire door inspection reports on to their system within 5 days of inspection, and also to use their inspection app, is this correct or did I misunderstand? I am asking as many of our clients require us to sign Non-disclosure agreements prior to any inspections and obviously this creats a problem. We have tried to contact the FDIS by phone and email for about 2 weeks now, but it seems unless it's about a payment they are simply not interested, will not r…

When building a sub frame around a fire door I know the guidance states solid wood should be used. Is it acceptable to use ply wood? It is spanning the width of the wall and is positioned side on so you can see it’s layers. my concern is whether the layers would break down too quickly in a fire and would be point of failure. This is around fd30 and fd60 door sets.

Hi there could I have some advise please in regards to an FD30 fire door fitted on a busy corridor. Is it ok to have a pull handle (300mm stainless steel bow handle) which bolts right through the door the bolt is counter sunk into the timber and then covered with a stainless steel push plate. I thought this would compromise the integrity of the door, I thought the pull handle should be screwed to the surface of the fire door with a rose. Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi, In my work place the door on each level has a FD60 leading to the staircase which has Georgian wire glass panel but no intumescent around the glass. The door has no information & the door inspector has flagged this up but not recommended a way to resolve this. Would a new door set be needed or can we put fire rated glass & intumescent around?

Hi, I need to install a door closer that conforms to BS EN 1154 but the fire door itself is small and opens to an under stairs cupboard with limited room, so a typical overhead isn’t an option. So far I can only find the Astra 4000 series which, I think, conforms to this standard. Is this correct? Any other closers that I could be looking at? Any help/advice appreciated! Kim

  24. I would welcome some advice about doors and door closers in our house. We have just moved to a house built in 1906. The loft was converted about 15 years ago. There is a fire door leading to the loft room. All the other doors - ie habitable rooms leading off the main escape route are stripped, traditional doors. Two questions. First: should the stripped doors have (concealed) closers for fire reg and/or insurance purposes? Second: should the stripped doors be replaced with fire doors? The conversion was subject to planning permission and building reg clearance at the time, so we assume it was right at the time - but have regs changed? At the moment, I am more…
