Fire Doors and Accessories

  1. I want to fit a number of 44mm fire doors where the existing doors (and rebates) are only 35mm. To get the depth a hammer and chisel would take too long and be too uneven so I'm thinking of either a router or a combination of a mini-circular saw to cut down and a multi tool to cut in. Once I have 44mm I can plant a strip of 8mm batten alongside the edge to deepen the stop from 8mm to 16mm. Anybody tried anything else to achieve the required end? Thanks Ari

Hi All, What is the rule for using rubber ferrules on the plunger type door retainers? Do they have to be fire retardent, or can they be normal rubber? As far as I can see I think the answer is they don't need to be fire retardent as long as the door retainer does not compromise the integrity of the fire door itself, is this correct? Thanks Mark.

We are a joinery company and we are unsure if grained doors are of FD30 Standard? Because usually FD30 has to be 44mm in thickness, so if the grain is thinner, the door is no longer 44mm. Please help.

Our multi-occupied housing co-op has two stairway fire doors with panels of laminated fireproof glass approx 60 high x 80 cm wide . (I don't know what type of glass, but good quality.) They both have cracks where a large triangular corner has cracked, a triangle say 20 cm vertical by 60 cm wide in both cases. Questions: --- Do they continue to offer fire protection, or do they need to be replaced? --- It seems strange that they would both crack in the same way, and I wonder if they could have been installed too tightly or something like that ... any thoughts on this? Many thanks Andy

Hi, I have a boiler room along an escape route in my hotel, the room is small in size 1m2 and has no detection, A fire door is fitted to the room but no smoke seals or intumescent strips. Is it a fair assumption to make that smoke seals are not fitted to allow a small amount of smoke into the corridor to trigger the detector, initiating escape. (if this is the case would a detector have to be within a certain distance of the door. I am aware this sounds counter intuitive, is the alternative to fit a detector in the boiler room and fit smoke seals and intumescent strips? Other Factors - The escape route is single direction of travel - No…

I have recently converted my double garage to a play room in 1 garage and a utility in the back half of the other. The builder has fitted a new fire door between utility and store but isn’t self closing and doesn’t have the seal around edge of door like the old 1 from house to garage. does this matter as it isn’t really a garage anymore it’s only a store. 2.5m by 2.5m. any help would be great thanks

Hello, Could you please advise as to whether an FD30 door needs to comply with alignment specs?. I once found an internet posting regarding BM Trada that stated under the heading of Door Gaps that the alignment tolerances: "Leaves must not be proud of each other or from the door frame by more than 1mm". However I do not know whether such a requirement is general or only applicable to a particular setup. My position is a requirement for FD30's for an HMO.

  10. Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me deciding the best way to interface a device to a fire alarm for Critical Category BS7273-4 compliance. I'm trying to decide which is the most common interface type that is generally available on fire alarm panels without having to use volt-free relays or anything that might 'steal' valuable resources from the fire alarm panel for a dedicated interface. According to BS7273-4 diagram C1.b, I'd need an output from the alarm that is passes in series through a normally closed fire relay and normally closed fault relay (at least one being normally energised) and a power supply in series with this too. I assume the AUX 24V supply could be …

Hi, I am wandering if anyone can help me! I have been putting metal fire doors signs on my fire doors with the screws provided. I was told by a friend that screwing the signs into the door will actually reduce its integrity and voids its "fire door" status. Is this correct? Than you Rog

  13. Hi, According to EN 1634-1:2014, the furnace temperature will reach 1000 degrees Celsius after 60 minutes, if melting point of brass is 900 degrees Celsius how cylinders are supposed to maintain its integrity during the test? Many European third party labs will require that doors during the test to have double cylinder in order to achieve successful EI90 or EI180 doors. Anybody has a solution to this problem?

I have a requirement for 150 to 200 fire doors to be inspected. I would prefer to sub contract this to 'Fire door inspector' and get it done correctly, however the first response from my MD will be 'can we do it cheaper in-house'. I would like to be able to quote some legislation or a British standard which states that the person has to be qualified, is this the case ? His second response is likely to be 'what is the cost of getting someone internally qualified ? and who can this be done by?' He is as tight as a ducks behind, thanks in advance !

Hello, I am hoping you could provide some information regarding fire door types. I have a steel frame/glass paneled double door in a place of work and have been told it is a fire door however it is missing any identification as to it's rating, doesn't have a visible seal in the frame and has a visible gap between the two doors. Is it possible that this is a fire door with fire resistant glass or is this more unlikely? I understand this is perhaps an odd request but my research into fire door regulations hasn't provided any solid answer. Many thanks Kristian

Hi, I have been advised that the door to the oil-fired boiler cupboard should be a fire door, in addition there is insufficient ventilation for the boiler. I initially bought one of these: http://www.diy.com/departments/6-panel-primed-woodgrain-unglazed-internal-fire-door-h1981mm-w686mm/73552_BQ.prd I have already bought an intumescent fire grill from Safelincs (which is a fraction thicker than the 35mm of the door, but I hope the fascia grills will compensate for that). My question... is this door suitable to have a fire grill installed? I ask as my father in-law made quite a show of telling me I don't know what I'm doing... the contents of the door w…

I live in a victorian block of flats and we are considering replacing our individual front doors with new fire doors. However, one resident has asked about the likely fire resistent properties of the existing doors. Whilst we know that a current door would not give full fire protection, even with suitable replacement letterbox, self-closing mechanism and intumescent seals being added, would it be possible to roughly estimate the possible fire safety properties of our current doors? Would they give, say, 60% of the protection that a new fire door would provide? The doors are 44cm thick at most, other than the panels, and are the original victorian ones. I read that ot…

I would be grateful for some help. My student son and his flat mates have been charged the cost of replacing a fire door in the accommodation, total about £800. The damage is two or three tiny chips on the surface coating (attached) Is the University correct that these chip represent a significant compromise of effectiveness? Is it possible to simply repair/patch the coating? Or is the surface veneer merely a decorative facing not part of the fire resistance ? Having worked in the NHS for 39 years I suspect the decision may have been made by a non expert erring on the side of over caution, rather than a fully trained professional. Any …

Hi there, quick query. Is there a document that can advise on what doors should be a fire door. In particular, I would like to know if all kitchen doors need to be fire doors in non-domestic properties? Just a general question, not based on any particular building so there's no fire risk assessment to refer too. Thanks for your help all. Digger

Hi, Apologies if this isn't the right forum for such a message, but I need some advice on whether it is advisable or legal to cover an FD30 door with a decorative laminate covering? A client has requested this for a residential property within a set of flats. The laminates are not oil based, they are generally made from compacted paper. Fitting would otherwise be as standard with intumescent strips and paper. If you can help shed any light on this I would appreciate your help, Kind regards, David

Hi folks, I am hoping to pick some brains of you knowledgeable fire safety guys. I am a carpenter and have been asked to price to replace a few fire doors in a 1960's care home for residents with dementia. Upon my first assessment of the place I noticed 95% of the fire doors that were fitted had been altered to turn them into fire doors/frames. What I mean by altered is the old 1960s 35mm door frames had been used to swing 44mm fire doors, so I'm guessing the density of the softwood alone isn't correct. There are a lot that have chunks of wood missing from both frame and the door so don't actually seal properly, the doors have been routered out and intumesc…
