Fire Doors and Accessories

Hi, We have a set of fire doors for our kitchen, that open both ways as they push a food trolley in and out of the kitchen. The doors shut when not in use and meet in the centre. The also have intumescent strips around the doors. The hinge is fitted from the floor and above the door going into the bottom and top of the door. Are doors that swing both ways acceptable or against Fire Safety? Thanks a lot for your help. Kind regards, Gary

Hello there. I have an FD60 door to a boiler room which is due to be upgraded. Will a 15mm combined intumescent/cold smoke strip be sufficient or would a 20mm be preferable? Kind Regards, Brian

Flat is located above a pub premise. In a rented flat with no inner rooms and 2 exit routes, do all habitable rooms still require Fire doors to protect the escape route/corridor?

I am looking for information as to what height I should put the 'Fire Door Keep Shut' signage on my new fire doors. There does not seem to be a statutory height that I can find in the Building Regulations.

Hi We have an exit from the office that goes into the warehouse, I originally thought of this as a fire exit as it has a push bar on the inside but as it does not lead outdoors so does this mean it is classed as a fire door? It has a handle on the outside and is used regular for access from the warehouse to the office and vice versa. I have had a health and safety advisor tell me we should not be using it. Is it ok for us to use this door as we do? should I replace the push bar handle with a normal handle if we are going to continue to use it regular? Thanks Polly

Can you replace floor spring door closer with an over head door closer (this is for a fire door)? I am struggling to find the correct floor spring closer so wanted to know whether I could fit and an overhead one on the same door instead?

Thanks I look forward to your response. Do I need a fire door closure in addition to the retainer. If I installed a fire door retainer, would this work on a door that doesn't stay open on it's own? I have an indoor fire door within the office. It doesn't hold open on it's own. Hi

If the only door into a particular area is a fire door, and people regularly work in that area should that fire door be closed even when somebody is working in that area. If there is a fire outside that door the person would be trapped inside the area. If there is a fire inside the area again person could be overcome by smoke and people on outside may not realise what has happened inside area.

Can you tell me if there is any benefit of having flush double fire doors over rebated double fire doors. Also in what event would I need to fit a door selector? Would there ever be a need for one with a flush double fire door set?

I have created a fire door log for regular inspections of the doors and will be doing a similar log for the fire escape doors, do I need to do the same for doors not labelled as fire doors or fire escapes? I would also like to know if new fire doors need to be certified and CE marks on the ironmongery and if so, when this became a requirement?

I made it very clear before I started the job that I could not supply a certificate but only those issued by the manufactures? How do I go about this? Here is the list and details of what I did. 1.. took out existing glass in transom and replace with 7.2 Pyrogaurd. fitted them with hardwood beading, glued, screwed, and 30min fire seal tape both sides. All glass are etched I basically followed instruction I found online. 2.. Removed existing 100mm steel hinges and…

Hi, I am considering the installation of a Dorgard fire door retainer. However, I have heard that the Dorgard is 'best suited for retrofit installation and should not be used on fire doors leading onto staircases.' Can you please let me know the specific regulation relating to this so I can pass it on to my client. I cannot understand why this limitation applies. Thanks. David

Hi I work for a landlord who owns three Houses in Multiple Occupation. They are just being re-licensed (well, two of them as the third is not required to be licensed). We have been asked to remove the brush-type smoke seals we installed five years ago and queries this request. This is the reply they have given: ***The reason for asking for the removal of these seals is, as you have stated in your letter, because they stop smoke escaping through the door. As there are no smoke alarms within these rooms, should a fire start in any of these bedrooms, the brush seals would prevent smoke escaping out of the room to the nearest smoke detector and alerting all other tenant…

My housing association landlord is trying to insist on fitting a fire door to the kitchen, the problem is they are refusing to match it up to the style of all my other doors which I have installed at my own cost, I live in a self contained 2nd floor flat. Do they have the law on their side to insist that I must comply.

Looking for advice, my daughter is in a shared student house with 2 other girls, the house has a basement and converted loft. The girls have bedrooms on two floors. My main concern is lack of doors, no door between stairs and dining room and only a curtain between dining room and kitchen. The agent has told the girls that this is acceptable , I disagree, could you advise. Only a normal door between basement and dining room too.

Hi All, As far as I can gather BS7273-4 stipulates certain maximum times for failing safe with door closers which are different for Category A, B or C. Can someone with access to the spec please tell me if there is an maximum activation time from normal fire alarm specified? The maximum time to activation for faults such as short or open circuits is 2 minutes and 6 minutes for loss in radio comms for Cat A and 120 minutes for Cats B & C. There are other documents I've seen that state that the system should behave in fault conditions exactly as it would in fire alarm conditions, so does that imply a maximum of 2 minutes from fire alarm activation? Also if BS7…
