May I ask for some advice? One of our managers wants to stick a vinyl laminated poster to a fire door, for decoration. The vinyl is B1 rated but as the poster is A3 size I am not sure whether to approve this.

Hi Guys what is the minimum spec for fire door self closers My local council advised on bsn1134:1997. But I have seen self closers with this spec BS EN 1634 or Are they both fine, are are is there a big difference? My tenants don't really want a the overhead style ideally they want something less obstrusive like a perko. The prices vary greatly . I have seen some chain style perkos for £15-£135. I am really confused as to the above standards are they both fine?

I wondered if there was legislation to suggest that fire door closers should be fixed to the inside of a door rather than the outside. I have had a closer fixed to my door on the outside. I have not seen this before so I wondered if this is the correct fitting. I am on the 22nd floor of a tower block and my door leads into the communal hallway. I was also concerned that this may allow someone to prevent me from opening the door from the inside (unlikely- but a possibility).

Can you please advise me of the following. Your website states that "Fire doors will have automatic closing devices (fire door closers) fitted. " but is this talking about compartmentation doors like flat entrance doors or does it include bedroom doors to flats, as Building Control state that perecos are not required on bedroom doors, even ones that open onto a 30min protected hallway withing the flat. Can you help clarify please. Dave

Hello, I am trying to ascertain the fire rating for fire doors in our factory (large steel doors with counterbalance arrangement and fusible link). Doors were manufactured in 1970 by G.Brady & Co. Ltd. Name plate present on door states that fire door, fittings and frame conforms to the ‘Fire Offices’ Committee Specification 2’ Do you know what the above spec equates to in terms of fire rating? Much appreciate any help you can provide in relation to this matter. Yours sincerely, Declan

Dear Forum Could you please help me as I'm stuck. We've just undertaken a loft conversion necessitating fire doors. Our local council is the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. I spoke to a door manufacturer today following an enquiry on their 4 panel door range. The advice I received was: The max trim off our doors is: 10mm off each rail and also the bottom of the door. 3mm off the top. Most fire door (FD30) sizes come as either: 1981 x 762 x 44mm / 1981 x 610 x 44mm / 1981 x 813 x 44mm. The fire door sizes we need are as follows: Top floor: …

Hello, I need to confirm some information I have read regarding fire doors in blocks of high rise flats and was hoping you could get back to me as soon as possible please. Could you please confirm if all fire doors/front doors to individual flats have to have a self closing device to make sure these fire doors shut to prevent fire from spreading and, if so, what that rule is and where I can find this, when this rule came into being and what are the possible repercussions? Also, do the internal doors of the flat need to have fire doors and if so, where, when this rule came into being, etc? Have all fire doors got to have the product/fire door code on the top of the f…

Hi, We have recently had a fire risk assessment and the recommendation was that we need to upgrade our existing fire doors and electrical intake cupboard doors (they all need cold smoke seals and intumescent strips). Can we use a local experienced joiner to do this remedial work even though he hasn't got a third party fire safety certificate. The report says we need to employ a "Competent contractor"

I wonder if you can help me? I am helping with the interiors on a B&B pub. We are thinking of changing all the doors. Do the doors to the rooms need to be fire doors? Also do the ensuite bathroom doors need to be fire doors? It would be very helpful if you could give me information on this. Many thanks, Hannah

I live in a ground floor flat and attached is another flat where their kitchen is on the ground floor (behind my bedroom wall) with their living accommodation upstairs. There is a connecting door which connects the 2 flats just outside our bathroom and access corridor and at the bottom of the stairs of next door flat opposite their kitchen entrance. This has been designated as a Fire Door by our Landlord but it is not 'fit for purpose' in my opinion. It is not properly sealed for smoke ingress in to my flat (no prevention) as I can see lights on next door through the door frame and anyway it is always kept permanently locked. What I need is a legally backed argument where…

Hi there, I hope you will be able to answer my question, but not to worry if not. I have become a tenant in a flat which is maintained by a housing association, and they have said that all doors in the flat (i.e. not just the front door, but the individual doors on each room) are fire doors. However, when I asked them to which FD standard (so I could know how long they would withstand a fire), they said they didn't know. As a result, I'm not sure I trust whether these are fire doors. On top of the doors, there is some black writing printed on. It reads: 240910 K2152167 23138 P6 PLUS 826 FS. Does this confirm that they are fire doors? I can see no other visible si…

Hello I am new here. We need some door closers for a large old holiday house let in Scotland. I spoke to a techie at Dorma who claims that nobody anywhere makes a closer that meets our requirements! But is he correct? Our thinking so far: What we want is a door closer that you barely know is there but it does close the door for you. We want is: A). QUIETNESS - The door needs to close as quietly as possible B). SLOW CLOSING (AUTOMATIC) - The door needs to close the door only very slowly on it's own. C) FAST OPENING & CLOSING (MANUAL) - The door needs to both open and close fast if the users push it manually. D). HIDDEN - Ideally the clos…

Hi, I live in a ground floor of purpose built flats which is one of 4 (2 ground & 2 upstairs). The other flats have upvc front doors. My front door is the original one from when the flats were built in the 60's and is in desperate need of replacing. However, the management company tell me that I have to have a 30 minute fire door. As I live on the ground floor and given that no one else have fire doors, is this the case? Is there a particular professional that I can contact to assess the situation? Thanking you for your help

Hello, i would like to ask a question about the construction of fd30 doors, why is there only an allowance of 5-8mm genualy to be able to trim off the bottom? I am a carpenter/joiner with 26 years behind me in fitting doors. In that time its a novelty to fit a house out with new doors and not trim for thick carpet-hard wood ect. would it be that difficult to increase the solid timber at the base of a fire door to give 25mm tolerance to cut. For a start an fd30 frame is normally around 5mm thicker than a standard frame so your already on a loser and genuraly the frame is tight to the lintel. Are the companies that make fire doors expecting clients to pa…
