Hi I work for a campaign group in Hounslow, all are members have learning disabilities. A lot of our campaigns help to make Hounslow a better place to live and work. Recently we asked a library to adjust the doors to the ladies, gents and disabled toilets so that they will be easier to use. This is a busy library and the toilets are also used by many people visiting the Citizen Advce Bureau. The doors are difficult to use for able bodied people even without carrying shopping bags, etc. they are even more difficult for disabled people, the elderly, parents with young children and prams, etc. The libraries response was that they are fire doors and they comply with health …

I have a question that I have not found an answer to on your forum and wonder if you could help. I have been asked to find out if it is permissible to add draught excluder to a fire door? Your advice would be appreciated. These are nominal fire doors situated at the top of a flight of stairs leading into an office. Thank you in advance for your help.

I am 86 years of age, seriously disabled with major Heart Problems to the extent that my Cardiac Professor's' advise me not to cause extertion to my Failing Heart.(Certification is available). My Door Closer should be Electrically Operated and I would be pleased if you can confirm this.

Where our electrical cupboard for the consumer unit and meter, etc is situated is directly under the stairs, but the door to it is only some rubbish chipboard painted white which wouldn't probably last a second in a fire. And would block our only escape route(except for jumping out of the 1st floor windows) if a fire broke out in there. Also I'm not sure if under the stairs themselves would need to be sprayed/coated with something fire retardant as well. As I don't know how quickly they would burn in a fire;at least would take longer than the thin chipboard cupboard door. And would the conducts of where the cables from the consumer unit go through the plaster…

Hi, are there any guidances or legislations concerning the position of MDR in relationship with closing device? When designing door retainers to doors with floor mounted springs and high level closers, with say, regard to prevent door stresses and the fire door from warping so that the retainer should be mounted adajacent to the closer? Or would this be just best practice?

We have had a recent fire inspection and have been advised that we need to fit smoke seals and intumescent strips to our existing fire doors which are over 30 years old. The Building Manager has raised concerns that we should not be modifying or adapting exsiting fire doors and this may be in breach of Building Regs? Is this correct? We have been advised that intumescent strips are within the lippings of some of the existing doors and in order to fit smoke seals we will need to rout out the door edges to fit the smoke seal. Can you please advise if we can modify existing door sets? Many Thanks

We are refurbishing a block of flats. Currently the flat doors, communal doors and riser cupboards all have the intumescent strips and seals installed in the door frames but not in the doors. Does this comply with regulations?

When fitting a fire door, if you plane off the hardwood edge lipping, does this compromise the integrity of the fire door even if you still install intumescent strips?

We need to fit a service hatch between a plant room and a service corridor. It should be 1hour fire rated. Can we simply use a small door of 1mtrs square with a closer and latch or does this break the rules. Can you supply such a door and frame please and if so how much. Thanks

I am enquiring if you can help me find the answer to the following question. There are fire doors in the house I am currently living in (from looking around on your website, I have no idea what kind of fire doors) and I am interested in fixing coat hooks to the back of the doors. I have checked and the screws do not protrude though the fire door. Can you please advise me where I can find information on this, ie. I would like to know if this is possible or will fixing the coat hooks nullify the fire door status. Thank you

Hi I would like some advise, please. I work in a care home and would like to know where I can get information on whom to contact when someone has a question about fire prevention. We are not too sure where we stand about fire prevention. Two residents always have their bedroom doors openday and night, as they feel hot, where do we stand legally, in case there is a real fire? We do a fire drill every week. Do we get the residents to sign a disclimer to say that they take full responsible if there is a real fire? Please advise as we are getting no where. Many thanks

Good Morning, I am attempting to seek some advice regarding one of our entrances to our business. A few years ago, our business had a glazed front door installed with the mind set that it was Fire Resistant (FD30). We have been recently made aware that the glazed door is not fire resistant and have been requested to take suitable measures to bring the entrance into line with regulations. The position of our business means that the entrance in question comes out onto a fire evacuation staircase so there needs to be some form of fire prevention to ensure that people on the floors above can still use the staircase safely in the event of a fire. Short of us re…

Just a query... Is it classed as an obstruction of a fire exit door to have a slam lock latch on one of 3 designated fire exits on the ground floor in our office building? This particular door has an entry system allowing clients to buzz the particular company they would like to see and once inside the door closes onto the latch behind him/her. Please advise. Many Thanks.

As self employed H+S Adviser/Consultant, I have been asked by a small client about fire doors. Whilst he has swing shut and self closing fire doors in the office, the push-bar fire exit doors have no closing mechanism. 1. Are the swing shut and self closers in the office correct? 2. Does the exit door need a self closer? Thanks

Hi, we have recently built a two storey exstension with loft conversion in Oxford and got the building inspector round to sign it off, but she (the nice lady) has told us that the fd30 doors with a good 3mm gap will need to have intumescent strip routered into them.? On the other side of oxford with a different building inspector we constructed a loft conversion and have had it signed off with no mention of the intumescent stip. Have tried to get information on the net but cant seem to find any such laws. Please can you help.!!!

We are installing an external door leading from our garage to the outside side passage which leads between our house and the side bricked wall of the next doors house. Would this door need to be 30 minute fire rated or because it is an external door can it just be a normal external door? Thanks for your help

I am looking for a heavy duty panic bar door lock to install outdoor on an offshore platform. The lock should be on one side mounted with panic bare and on the other with a lock. As the environment is offshore, I need something heavy duty that can resist the marine environment.
