Emergency Lighting

  1. I manage a small block of 4 flats, 2 on each of the 2 stories of the purpose-built block. The block is free-standing and not attached to neighbouring properties. We have an emergency lighting system installed but is it really necessary for such a small block? And having it, does it need to be expensively tested each year by a qualified electrician?

Hi there Can I ask how to change batteries in emergency lights? Also, would you consider the changing of the batteries in emergency lights a task capable and expected of a non qualified person? Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks Steve

Hi, can you split up the emergency lighting monthly testing in a large building in a similar way as to weekly fire alarm testing i.e. test each floor say each month so that after six months the whole building has been tested or do you have to test all emergency lights every month as we have about 300?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can advise whether a maintained, non maintained or sustained emergency lighting system is recommended for a supermarket. It would be helpful if you can also say why because i am a little unsure, although i'm thinking its a maintained system. thanks!

Hi, Can you please help, I am having problems understanding the battery requirements of my emergency lights. The company I use "Fire Safety Services" insist on testing my lights to 3 hours (actually 2 + 1 but that doesn't make sense to me). I am saying that I believe that as per BS5266-1 2016 (I do not have a copy) I can (I run an office and medium size warehouse facility) with the correct procedures i.e. immediate evacuation and a no return policy, test to 1 hour duration. Can you please confirm and give me an example from BS 5266-1 2016 where this is stated. Thanks

I live in a new apartment block ( 2007) and we have a flat on the 2nd floor. There is a third floor above us. There is a central staircase which winds around the lift..There are no windows on any staircase or landings. Twice recently ,we have had lighting failures one of which lasted from Friday to Monday. There is no emergency lighting and this represents a great hazard for residents. We own our flat and the building is a mix of owners and renters. We pay management charges to the developer who are also the landlords for the rental properties. My question is this....Are the Landlords obliged to have emergency lighting in the building and if yes, then why was this no…

Hi hello, I am not looking to install this exit sign for actual commercial use, this is solely because I like exit signs and want to put one in my house. It is only residential, it does not need to be there. I was wondering, my sign has a neutral, positive and negative power wire. Could I take a regular three pronged extension cord (this is North America, not the UK) and cut off the end, strip it, and connect the two power cords and the grounding wire, then plug it into the wall? Thanks!

Hello, Can anybody help me with this difficult issue? I need to design the emergency escape lighting system of a building with a complicated structure in terms of escape paths. For example there are many rooms with 2 doors. From each door of a room I can identify an escape path to a different outdoor exit. One of the 2 paths is a bit longer - for example one path crosses 2 rooms and the other one crosses 3 rooms. My question is: should I place the emergency escape luminaries near each door of a room, or i should choose only the shortest path? Thank you.

Hello I just worked at a residential block of flats ( assisted living ) all of the corridor lights on four floors are supplied via an inverter in case of mains failure , however when I isolated certain areas to work on lights there are no emergency lights they rely on the inverter which is ok with total power loss but no good if a fault on local circuit, can you advise please Kind regards Nigel

Hello. I'm pleased that good manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty on maintained LED lights. 3 years was a bit tight, 1 year a complete nonsense. However, I was under the impression that to gain BS 60598-2-22 2014 accreditation, the manufacturer also had to guarantee the batteries for 4 years, as long as they had been installed and tested correctly. I have know found out that this is not the case. The 4 years only applies to the 'Design Life', not the warranty. Please, what does that mean? I could make a cork-screw with a 'Design Life' of 30 years, and it snaps on the first cork. The cork-screw was used correctly, but it snapped. Is the warranty no lo…

Hi All Please some advise , do privately owned garages/storerooms need emergency lighting if so to what degree. Recently wired basement possibly used to store materials, (15 mts x 21 mts). It has four 2 watt LED bulkhead emergency lights through the middle leading to the only fire exit door. Would this be sufficient as it illuminates to the route to the fire exit or would the whole area need to be flooded with light. The four bulkhead light can achieve 0.5 lux easily through the center line of the open space. Some advice please or where to look. Many Thanks Stu

LEDs on emergency bulk head light on all the time. Hello Gentlemen, my question is this, I have an emergency bulk head light in the hall and a few days ago all the LEDs came on, well they were on when I got up. There was no power cuts neither was the power turned off. I turned off the power and the LEDs stayed on and when I turned it on again they still stayed on. As I have no clue about this and no one touched the light can anyone tell me what they think might be going on with the light? It was put in new last year. Thanks very much.

I was always taught that when testing new and regular tested fittings a 1hr duration was an acceptable period but when testing fittings that have not been tested a full 3hr duration had to be undertaken. OIs this still the case and where can I get confirmation of this in BS5266 ?

  19. Hi all I have a problem with some emergency lighting where the LED's are not lit in normal operation, then when i put the light into test mode it works and the battery has charge to luminate the light. As soon as i take the light out of test the LED is then lit but gradually gets dimmer after a few minutes then goes out again. The units are a T5 21W strip light with a tridonic Atco PC1x21/28-5 and 2 x 3.6v nimh batteries. I have a few units doing the same thing. These are connected to what i'm told is an intteligent light system. We originally thought it was battery problems but have now ruled that out. Now my electrician is saying its a fault with th…

Hi all I have been doing a bit of reading up on emergency lighting for my bed and breakfast. I would like to know a little more about emergency lighting in staff ares. There are two call points by both the front and back doors in the staff area that currently don't have any emergency lighting. These areas are NOT emergency escape routes to be used by the public. Should these call points have emergency lights bearing in mind they are in public areas. There is an external fire escape for the public to use which has maintained emergency lights. Thank you

On a small public house that has no emergency lighting: I wish to install such lighting. The pub is 150 years old and consists of three smallish rooms. It also has a corridor leading to an exit and two toilets. It has a flat up#stairs for the publican. When I talk to contractors that are all 'thinking big' involving lifting the flooring in the flat and laying new cable from the main fuse box. The other choice is using ducting but this is not appropriate in such an old pub. As an example I can see an emergency light is required in the corridor as it has no windows. It already is served by a switched flush fitting light. What I cannot understand is why I cannot replace…

I work in a building where we recently (2 years) had a 110v Central Battery System that was specified to supply a 3 hour supply in the event of a mains failure! Is it correct for the installer to conduct Yearly checks and undertake a 1 hour discharge test. I think it should be 3 hrs? Is there an REG/ACOP/GI that states 3 hours? Thanks Rees

  25. Hello all, I was wondering if anyone can help. I have been tasked with getting a ghaost to appear on stage and it seems that the easiest way is to have an actor in a black sheet that then drops to reveal them. Trouble is... the emergency lights cast too much light over the stage for it to be effective. Is it allowable to turn emergency lights off for 10 secs and then turn them back on again? Thanks for any advice
