Emergency Lighting

Hi, We have 2 blocks of residential flats with lighting throughout. The amount of electricity wasted in communal access corridors and stairwells is enormous. I would like to arrange motion sensors with timers for the lights in the stairwells and communal corridors but am unsure of regulations. Please can you point me towrds the relevant regulation? Must there be some light on in communal escape routes permanently? If so, how much - what are the rules? We have an emergency backup system throughout encase of power failure. Many thanks for your help

Hi i am a bit confused about the energy consumption of some of the LED emergency lights. If they consume between 5 and 8 watts (see example of LED emergency light -see datatsheet in technical tab), why not just use ordinary emergency lights with standard fluorescent tubes (8-20 Watts)? They cost a fraction of the LED lights. Paul

Were should maintained lights be required in a Small Boys'brigade Hall, there is two final exits in this building, should there be maintained lights at the final exits only , and what legislation covers that.

I am putting in emergency lighting on a house used for commercial use. I was wondering if the emergency lights can go just above the doors which will illuminate them. Is there a specification of how far out from the door into the ceiling they need to be? I am also looking for exterior emergency lights and hoped there may be ones which are tiny? Thanks Sarah

My name is Nick and I am a Masters student. I am emailing you to ask if you would be willing to help me improve my project by helping me on a few issues I am having problems with. I am designing a back-up power supply system for a refuge structure. The structure will hold 1500 people within 4 floors (total 4000m2) and supply them with safety, comfort etc but with minimal costs/consumption etc. I need to calculate the power consumption for the refuge which will operate for a maximum of 7days, (168hours): Lighting (Currently I am struggling to calculate this for this structure - 1000m2 floor area), I believe that 200 lux would be a minimal illuminance but still …

I would like some advice on emergency lighting certification. We have used a company to test a site, and a 2nd company to carry out the resulting remedial repairs. How do we go about showing the client that the emergency lights are all tested and working?

Is there a battery only emergency light available?

  9. Is it compulsory to have Emergency Lighting in Low Rise Communal Areas? We have Emergency Lighting in all our High Rise Multi Storey Blocks however the guidance we have on Low Rise doesn’t state if we need it more that it’s desirable.

I am trying to establish the statutory requirements for an employer regarding testing both emergency lighting and fire alarms. I have looked through your website but I am still unclear as to what is statutory and what isn't. Can you provide any further information? Many thanks,

I saw your helpful website and thought you may be able to offer me some advice on which sticker to use over the lens of my replacement safety lamp. I am a Registered Electrician who is replacing a safety lamp at a nearby club which has been vandal damaged. The location of the light is outside immediately above the main entrance door to the club. The existing damaged light did not have a sticker on the lens but I believe it should have had! The 2 labels supplied with the new Extera Lamp I've just purchased, are shown in the attachment. I think the bottom sticker is the one to use - any advice please??

Hello! I have just spotted you sell emergency exit light box's http://www.safelincs.co.uk/Fire-Exit-Sign-...-ES8M/?fGB=true This is a weird request but we want a small wall mountable light box that we can use as an 'on air' sign. Is the emergency exit actual sign replaceable so we could swap it for the 'on air' message? Also is there a hole at the back of the sign so it could possibly be wall mountable or is the emergency exit shown on both sides (therefore ceiling mountable only)? Sorry for the weird question, Hope you can help.

Hi I am designing a scheme for a Ferry Terminal and I would like for all my signs to be aluminum panels with stencil cut letters and back lit so the letters are illuminated. My exit signs would be back lit in green. Would it go against building regulations to have my exit signs in this design rather than the standard green and white? If not is this something you would be able to supply? Kind regards, J.T
