I've just done a fire risk assessment for our domestic premises (house converted into 9 flats) and have noticed we have no emergency lighting. obviously we have normal ighting and lighting from the street but do we have to buy emergency lighting as well? Cheers Mark

Can we skip the manual monthly emergency light testing and rely only on the automatic self-test one? Kind regards Bart

Hello We have two install jobs for wind-farm substations. Our equipment is inside a few shipping containers and separated into two sections. with each section having emergency exit doors straight outside. These are usually unmanned premises with occasional maintenance visits i.e. 3 monthly. We have lit emergency exit signs at each door but we are wondering if we need more emergency lighting. Where would I find the specifics for this kind of building as BS 5266 etc seem to concentrate on occupied premises?

Hi You site mentions non-maintained and maintained emergency lighting. I find this quite confusing. Could you please let me know what the difference is? Thanks Sue

I am after some advice. I live is a small block of flats built in 1997. It consists of just 6 flats over 2 storeys (ground floor, 1st floor and 2nd floor). We have natural light on every level (windows). My housing association are looking to charge us approx. £1000 per year (including vat) for our testing. This includes a monthly test and 1 annual test. We have 1 light on the ground floor (this comes on when it is dark and stays on until it becomes light again) and 1 switch on each floor that turns the 2 remaining lights on that are on timers ie. we press them on and they go off after a short while. What does a monthly test consist of, how long does it …

Half of our building is on automatic sensor operated lights, so there is no light switches. To test the emergency lights you have to do it via the fuse board. So this brings in the risk of having to touch and access the fuse board to test the lights monthly. My question is who would be deemed competent to do this? would it have to be an engineer/ electrician. Or what type of qualification should someone have to do this? I have a site service man, who says he can do it, but he has no formal qualifications or training in electrics. Would the fact that he has been shown by a qualified electrician be acceptable? Any maintenance is done by a qualified electrician. Al…

I have a question for anyone that can help. Is there any legal obligation to have an LED indicator on emergency lights in the UK that is visible from the user end if the device is a manual test unit? The reason I ask is we have in our office a 60x60 LED panel unit where the LED light indicator is on the back by the driver - so only visible if you pop your head up into the ceiling. It is just one light that goes from green to red. As I understand the BS standard there are multiple options for how emergency lights can be supplied. Either self test (where you must have an LED status indicator to show the product is working as it should) or manual t…

I live in a Victorina house that was converted into 6 flats. The conversion was done back in 1980s-1990s and there is no emergency lighting. I would like to know what is the rgulation for emergency lighting and fire detection in the premises. There are 2 studio flats + 1 three bedroom flat on the ground floor, 2 two bedroom flats on the 1st floor and 1 one bedroom flat on the 2nd floor. Could you please enlighten me what the requirement is? Regards

Hi there I wonder if you can clarify what lighting is required in the auditorium of a theatre. I appreciate the illumination of emergency exits is required but do you also need bright ceiling lights illuminating pathways to the exit or will floor lighting suffice? Can't quite interpret positioning of lighting from your reg BS5266-1:2011. Thanks Georgia

Im working at an old property (a small res. home for adults with learning disabilities) and have realised that some of the emergency lighting is not linked to the relevant local lighting circuit. That is, if said light circuit were to trip, then ELs in that area would not illuminate as they are still receiving mains power (all ELs are self contained, non maintained). They would obv. light in the event of a full power cut. The arrangement will have been in place for around 20years. Checking the wiring at the board there's no quick fix possible. To sort would involve a fair amount of work and inconvenience. Is there a reg that requires the present arrangement has to be reme…

We have just been asked to quote for an Electrical Condition report at a School in Nottingham. I visited the school to carry out a visual inspection of the Electrical Installation in order to issue an estimate for the testing. The caretaker showed me round the premise's and I couldn't help but notice battery hand held torches on wall mounted brackets, I asked what these were for and was told they are the emergency lighting for all escape routes. We are not required to check or test this emergency lighting but feel concerned that torches replace proper emergency lighting. Is this acceptable and should there be a maintenance routine? Regards Mark

I made a solar powered exit sign but worry that it did not allowed to be used. I can not find any standard or approval for such product. The solar panel generates the power is greater than consumption in cloudy days. Could it be classified as a self-illuminated sign? If I find a laboratory to test it, what is the standard to be conformed? e.g. BSxxxx-x. Regards, Martin

Hi I'm responsible for doing the weekly emergency lighting checks. I've just found some software for scheduling the checks to remind me where to check next, but this only keeps a record of the last time the light was checked, it doesn't keep a record of, say, the 5 times before that that it was also checked. Is this ok? Or do I need to find something that will keep a permanent log of when they have been checked? Thanks

Dear Sirs I am A Chairman of a local Camera club meeting in a community centre, we often have projected images on a screen, regretfully the light illuminating from the Fire exit Signs ruins the view of the images, it has been suggested that the signs could be covered up, I am dead against this as I know it contravenes health and safety legislation, I have searched you site and others to back me up on this but can not find anything to back me up in my argument, can you help me with my argument.

We currently have offices in London which are 100 yrs old, we have some areas which have no emergency lighting, one is a gents toilet, one a showere room, one an office. Outside each of the rooms is emergency lighting for the fire exits etc. We have been reccommended by our Fire Risk assessor to install emergency lighting. Are we required to do this by law??
