Fire Extinguishers

  1. Would members who are fire safety trainers have any advice on self refillable training fire extinguishers typically water and Co2 as less mess. Leader, Jockel, Gloria, Helimlick make models specific for training but I hear of others using Amerix 240 model or similar with a schrader valve for pressurizing. I would be interested to hear how other trainers manage it in a cost effective way. Thank you

Could anyone please tell me the correct height for installation of an automatic powder fire extinguisher for use in a forklift charging bay. I can't find anything solid so guess it's based on risk assessment. Hope someone can help. It's like this model https://www.ebay.ie/itm/223302628047?chn=ps&var=522088230647&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=5282-166454-587998-0&mkcid=2&itemid=522088230647_223302628047&targetid=2308550382942&device=m&mktype=pla&googleloc=9198581&poi=&campaignid=20320759638&mkgroupid=152362499922&rlsatarget=pla-2308550382942&abcId=&merchantid=5542277354&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=2032075963…

A very quick question - what are peoples thoughts / experiences on P50's being installed in buildings??? Have had two very different views provided to me this week - one for (guy made it sound like everyone needs a P50 in their life they are so good!) and one strongly against (due to not meeting BS5306)... Both parties sell their respective extinguishers so I don't want to be swayed by the sales talk and would really appreciate peoples honest opinions...good and bad! ?

Hi All anyone know the latest information on the ban of AFFF extinguishers, seems to be a lot of conflicting information on their use past July 2025, but I cant find anything that links any of this information back to any legislation..?

I have got 4 vintage fire extinguishers that I was thinking about selling. I came across them whilst tidying up my families old factory. I didn't want to just dispose of them as I know there are people out there who like to 'repurpose' these type of things. They were all made by 'The L&G Fire Appliance Company Ltd'. Three of them were made in 1948 and the other in 1967. All of them are still full and seemingly unused. On the label of the one made in 1967 it says it contains Soda Acid but on the others it doesn't say what it contains but I understand that it's probably Carbon Tetrachloride. My question is should I try and empty these things (or get a specialist to do i…

All our fire extinguishers are inspected and serviced annually. We carry out monthly in-house inspection and some of our Fire Wardens keep recording the missing gauge on CO2 Fire extinguishers. Must this pressure gauge be fitted on all of them please? Thank you very much for your advice! Kind regards Robert

  11. A 150m2 hairdressing salon is covered by a 6l AFF and 2kg CO2 by the main entrance (exit). There is no extinguisher by the rear exit It's time to upgrade and I am considering advising 2 x 2l water spray P50s - one at either door. As they are both rated at 8A, if I can use the aggregate 'score' of both extinguishers, there is plenty of cover as I only need <13A But can I add up the ratings of two smaller extinguishers like this at a very small and low risk retail outlet?

Hi. I’m opening up a shop this month and am keen to adhere to all of the legislation. Currently looking at the P-50 extinguishers as this seems the best option for me. The shop is very small, approximately 40-60m2. No specific risks, so looking at the foam version. One entrance and one exit in the small back room (no bigger than 8m2). I've read that a minimum of 2 extinguishers are needed, but if small enough then only one is required. But can’t find anything concrete on what size is classed as small. The previous occupier only had a 9L water extinguisher which is still in place, but will be removed as it’s not been serviced for a very long time s…

A very small restaurant was provided with 1x 6L wet chemical, 1x 2Kg C02, 1 x1.2 fire blanket all in the kitchen and 1x 6L Foam and 1x2Kg C02 in the sales area of the restaurant. For the available equipment, is below reasonable advice? For simplicity, would water mist not have been better?

Hi All, I have responsibility for a large number of buildings that have what I would call a kitchenette. They have tea and coffee making facilities with a microwave and a toaster. There is no open flame cooking such as a hob and neither are there any deep fat fryers etc. I have been asked if they need fire blankets as they are kitchens. My instinct is that we take a risk based approach to this and when you consider the type of fires you are likely to encounter and the types of fires a blanket is designed to combat it isn't necessary. I can't find anything specific for fire blankets so am reaching out to you folks for advice. Thanks in advance, Tim

Hi there, I'm after a bit of advice regarding a NU-SWIFT E 4000 Auto (UNI-FLASH) fire extinguisher. There are 2 of them on a farm that I work at, 1 is in the kitchen and the other in there workshop. They are dated 1982. I've read up a little bit about them and they seem to be dangerous to use now as they harm the ozone layer suposidly. Both are full btw. That said, the owners are reluctant to change them as a family member used to be a salesman for NU-SWIFT and had said they would still work after 50 years. What type of fires would they have been used for as it does say the fumes given off are dangerous, especially in confined spaces.

According to my service engineer, all foam and wet chemical extinguishers must be replaced, when due, with hydrospray type extinguishers to be in accordance with the Environmental Agencies drive to eliminate Persistent Organic Pollutants. This is set to happen over a 5 year period. Is this correct?

  23. Hello there, we had a blazing fire in our house in a bedroom caused by a Dehumidifier going bad. I managed to tackle the fire and put it out with a 2kg co2, 6kg foam, 2kg powder and a 9 litre water extinguisher. We have just had replacement extinguishers from our local company. Being 2 x 2 kg co2 and 2 x 6l foam. When I spoke to the fire company about our fire they said if you cant put it out with 1, get out and call 999. I explained that we live in a very rural area and it would be 25 mins till the fire brigade came and that we have zero phone signal. He was adamant that you get out if you cant stop the fire with 1 extinguisher. I said, I'm sorr…

I have seen in Uk the most common extinguisher apart from co2 is water ( foam is also common but not so common as water), water extinguishers are only for class a fires and seen them in offices, even restaurants, shops, etc. is very common to see combination of the classic 9l water + 2kg co2. BY contrast in Belgium and the Netherlands water extinguishers are not sold anymore ( modern water mi so foam extinguisher is the most common ( sometimes is rare to see co2 as they say foam is safe on electrical fires up to 1000v). Germany is not that different, though they sell water extinguishers, foam are the most common. Are different country preferences a reason ? Thanks. …

Thankyou so much for solving my doubts. Sincerely.
