Fire Extinguishers

I have recently been notified by a potential customer that our fire extinguishers are not fit for purpose as the anti-tamper seals are the wrong colour? They were all serviced in March 2018 and orange tags fitted but the customer is insistent that they MUST be grey otherwise they won't work with us? The service stickers on each extinguisher shows the service history and I have the paperwork to show they have been serviced. Does the tag colour relate to the year or is it down to the service engineer to choose the colour?

Greetings, good folks. I am the new Maintenance Director at a Memory Care facility, and have been tasked with giving a fire extinguisher demonstration complete with fire. My question is how do I create a relatively safe fire in a metal trash can or something similar outside that is easy enough to relight for multiple people to get actual "hands on" use of a fire extinguisher? Is there a safer alternative to using gasoline, such as a fire gel? How is this type of demonstration normally performed? Any tips you can provide would be most welcomed. Thank you.

Hi we had a really close shave this Christmas with one of the candles in the living room starting a small fire. The moss covering the crib Christmas display caught fire, as the candle next to it got smaller and smaller. We managed to extinguish it with a glass of mulled wine (the smoke alarm had luckily gone off), so we were very lucky. We have a powder extinguisher in the house but the thought of using it on this fire is scary. I had to use a powder extinguisher on my car once! Not sure what is worse, the fire or the mess a powder extinguisher makes. This made me think: would a powder extinguisher be any good on a Christmas tree fire? What would everybody recommend? …

Need Help choosing a Fire Extinguisher for my home. Some idiot is going around in my area and setting peoples front doors on fire while people sleep. As far as I know he is using some sort of petrol and a lighter. I would like to keep an extinguisher at home just in case. Can anyone recommend the correct one please.

Good afternoon, we recently had a fire extinguisher check undertaken and were informed that we have to have a fire blanket in the canteen area, even though there's no cooker simply because there's a toaster present. Is this the case as it doesn't seem to make much sense? We have a CO2 extinguisher less than 10m away.

Hello. The scenario is a small lawn bowls club. We have four metal sheds/portocabins that are used for changing rooms, storage and club rooms. The largest is used as a meeting room and has a small kitchen. No gas supply - all appliances and heating are electric and are restricted to kettles. We were given some fire extinguishers but some members are saying they don't see the need for having them. Is having them mandatory? Look forward to peoples opinions.

I have just become the landlord of a pub which has no fire extinguiher installed at all. I have been told i need them but do not know where are how many should be installed. Also do I need any specialist extinguishers behing the bar or in the cellar because of the alcohol risk?

ok am based in Scotland and i have about 20 units of 2kg co2 needing there 10 year hydrostatic pressure testing. now i can scrap them clame in the dosh for brash and buy reconditioned ones but i would like to see how much it would be to get them pressure tested so who out there can do the job what company should i go to. scotland based would be nice so postage wont cost me loads thanks guys

Hi Can we ask your advice - we have an office block (ground, first and second floors). Each floor is approx. 360M2. Two protected stairways - each have 2 x FD30s lobby approaches. Question is; do we need FEA's inside each protected stairway at each landing in addition to them being inside (adjacent to) each fire exit door in the office accommodation area?? At present, we have 1 x 13A Water Mist and 1 x 2KG FEA on brackets in the office accommodation area adjacent to the exit doors. Our thinking was that the fire risk is in the office area so if staff have to travel in to the stairway to collect the FEA's, they will then have to return in to the offic…

Hi, On Part 5.1 of BS EN 1869:1997 is says the BLANKET must be indelibly inked with manufacturer name etc, but I've never seen one that has. It there something I'm missing?

Is there a reason why you couldn't use CO2 gas pressure rather than nitrogen or air in wet extinguishers? Im guessing solubility might be an issue?

hello, wondering if you can help me I'm just wondering if a fire hose in an industrial factory can be used for filling up a water pit used for nothing to do with the fire system, could you help me or lead me to what is the law in the uk on them and if using a fire hose to fill an external pit in the factory is in fact illegal? The Jewel-Saffire / Ultrafire 1 litre water mist extinguisher appears to be a good choice for use in the home and it looks impressive in videos I have seen of the extinguisher in action. However, I am bit concerned that the extinguisher does not have a class 'A' or 'B' fire rating. I know that fire ratings should not be the only factor when choosing an extinguisher but having no rating at all seems strange, particularly when comparing the 1 litre water mist with, say a 2 litre foam (5A/55B) or wet chemical (8A/34B). Should I be concerned?

Hi, I have been tasked with finding out where our company stands with regards to providing fire suppression i.e. extinguishers and the if in the event of a fire happening, using the said equipment. As I'm of the opinion that if you dont know what extinguisher to use you should not attempt to put out the fire, for risk of making things worse? But the current CDM regs state that if the risk is there i.e. hot works (which our company does from time to time), then suitable controls need to be made. Can you shed any light on this. I have an empty 2011 NU-SWIFT 6 litre plus additive extinguisher. It was recharged last year but used since. I've replaced it with a foam one and wanted to know if it's of any value to someone. Or it goes down the tip.

Hi. We are a small business that is made up of 2 floors (ground floor and basement aprox 40m2 per floor). We have always had 2 extinguishers per floor. 1 x 2kg CO2 extinguisher per floor and 1 x 6kg Water extinguisher per floor. We have them serviced every year and they are approximately 3.5 years old. We have just had our annual service and the company has said that we need to replace our extinguishers with foam ones to comply with BS. Are we being conned? Is there a document I can refer to for some reference? Thank you Izak

There is an on going problem within the company I work for where somebody is systematically removing a wall mounted fire extinguisher and leaving it on the floor, sometimes in a place where it becomes a trip hazard, apart from the obvious risks is this breaking any fire regulations?

Hi I wonder if you can help? I have riding stables and need to install fire extinguishers. I can't use powder near hay but I am worried about the freezing of water and foam fire extinguishers, especially now in winter. What temperature ratings should the extinguisher have? From our last inspection I have been notified that one of our sites is not compliant to British stands (5306 Pt 3 & 5306 Pt 8) due to CO2 extinguisher being condemned-Obsolete Model. I have had this recently at another site and from my research I believe the CO2 has a life of 10 years as long as it has past its extended service (I think that is correct) from what I could see each extinguishers were under 5 years old. When contacting the compliance team at Chubb to request more information on why this is now obsolete they were unable to give an answer and were unable to tell me what 5306 Pt 3 & 5306 Pt 8 standards are so worried were are not conforming to regulatio…
