Afternoon to you I visited a home yesterday who are having an issue with doors fully closing after being fitted with smoke seals in the door rebates. I was wondering the rational of fitting them on the bedroom doors when the strategy is not a stay put policy but immediate evacuation via progressive horizontal evacuation. The compartment doors (I would think would be priority for smoke protection) only have intumescent strips applied. Is this normal for residential care home bedroom doors? I understand for individual flats would be different? Thanks

Hi there, Wondered if anyone on here can help. We are adding a fire door from our kitchen to our garage. The door will open into the kitchen, and have 3 steps down into the garage as there is 750mm drop. My question is, immediately after the door, can that be the drop to the first step? As we are opening the door inwards, not onto the steps, can there be an also immediate drop after the door. Can only see info on landing in part k, nothing that really relates to this. Thanks, Emma

I have been asked to provide third party certification for newly installed fire doors. The installation is for 10 doors, so do I need a certificate for each individual door or can it be generic? These are 60 minute metal fire doors.

Hi I am a first timer to forums and relatively new to Fire Protection works and seeking guidance. I have a fire specialist contractor undertaking fire stopping and compartmentation works in some offices which includes infilling some apertures (approx. size 500x500mm) in a 100 mm wide partition stud wall above a suspended ceiling that is clad with 12.5mm plaster board on both sides. In addition I am also having to infill breaches to a 225mm wide brick wall also above a suspended ceiling where various electrical and IT service are being routed through the aforementioned apertures. Both walls are on fire escape routes or above cross corridor door frames. I …

Are padded walls - where fabric is stretched between battens over padding - subject to the same restrictions as, say, cushions or pillows? Does there need to be a liner between the padding and the fabric, if not fire resistant, or does this fall in the exempt category?

Hi, I wondered if anyone knows whether you have to re-lip fire door blanks whatever you trim off them? And would they need re-lipping and strips fitting too??

I’ve found a sofa on Gumtree that has been imported from Dubai. It’s just occurred to me that it probably doesn’t have any fire retardant labels as presumably the laws are quite different out there? Would it be a mistake to buy it? Should the seller not even be trying to sell it? It would be for our own private use but of course safety is very important to me.

Firstly its a commerical site open to the public, i have numerous 30min fire doors on risers that have been over cladded with 18mm MDF. I'm unable to check gaps between frame and the door leaf etc, however in my opion cladding a fire door with MDF could compromise the integrity of the door. I don't know how they are fixed, however in my opion MDF burns at differnt rate than the fire door, so surly this shouldn't be allowed? Am i right or wrong? any opions on this people?

Hi, please help this newbie. I am getting mixed messages from my architect and my builder about where I need fire doors. The current flat is on a the ground floor of a four storey listed building. There is a communal area and we have our own front door. The front door seems to be a fire door but the rest of them are the original Victorian doors. We have a cellar, current accessed by an outside steep staircase. We are about to knock through the floor and put an internal staircase in. We are planning to have bedrooms in the cellar and a sitting room and kitchen on the ground floor. So, given that the flat will be two stloreys do I need to put …

Hi all, I would be grateful for your help please. I would like to ask your help in regards to a place of work I was working at to establish your views on hazards/risks that I have identified at this premises to reduce further accidents from happening. The picture enclosed is a fire exit door leading from the basement area of a property I used to work at. On numerous occasions I had to move boxes, disregarded desk chairs and rubbish from behind this door and unfortunately on one occasion when I did move the objects I caught my head on the side on the filling cabinet and cut my head open resulting in A & E hospital treatment, conc…

Hi, To carry out FRA works surveys do you need to be 3rd party accredited? The company is BM Trada Fire door installer and fire stopping installer accredited already. What are the standard fore door ranges? Are the one you buy them from Merchants like Howdens, Selco etc?

Hello all, We are a joinery workshop with a small storage room (42 m2) for our paints and solvents. There’s around 630l of pants, stains, thinners, hardeners and primers stored in a fire-resistant metal cupboard and in original packaging. There’s a direct exit to an open air area from the room and the emergency route is not obstructed by anything. The question is: are we allowed to store anything else in the room such as a small supply of sandpaper in cardboard boxes, wooden boards, small electric tools, etc.? It’s a small amount of materials that could potentially burn in case if fire started, but nothing that may enhance the risk of starting the fire. Apart…

Hi there, thanks for all the useful info here. I'm looking to renovate a buy to let flat but wanted to know first if I can safely open up the entrance hallway leading to the open kitchen/living area. There's currently a fire door separating the space, but may have been put in place some time ago. The bedroom has a fire door too, both with heat glass above the frames. I've attached a screenshot to show the changes to the floorplan but haven't had any consultation yet. Before (R) & After (L). The flat is on 1st floor with entry/exit through fire door leading onto communal staircase. The windows lead to small balcony across the front of the building. I really appreciate …

Hi, my company has sent out over 200 office chairs from our offices to staff working at home, these chairs are not new and subsequently not been specified to meet the Furniture and furnishings [fire safety] regulations, we are reopening our offices slowly but I am concerned that the chairs only meet BS7176 standards and we are putting our staff at risk not to mention breaking the law. would appreciate any advice please.

Hi all... I am a H+S Officer who works for a large care homes company who would like to have Georgian style solid wood furniture placed in the their care homes bedrooms. To keep a long story short, would they need to have these 'wardrobes, bedside cabinets' etc coated to bring them up to Class 1 (Class C) fire rated standards. I know aboutthe Crib5 for covering and upholstery, but I cant seem to find anything on fire protecting solid wood furniture. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Does an electric cupboard on a wall on the ground floor of a tanning parlour with seven rooms need to be enclosed in 30 mntes FR material if there is a smoke detector fitted nearby. If it is enclosed fire could develop and the smoke alarm might not go off.

Can anyone help with the following for my level 4 assessment. In two situations critically compare the guidance and codes of practice that address safety of life from fire and compliance with legislation. (e.g. Fire Engineered solutions to BS7974 vs BS9999)

I have reviewed many FRAs over the years and many many times have come across risk improvements regarding upgrading or remedial works to enclose server rooms in fire resisting construction. I may be missing something here but there is no recognised guidance (that I have seen anyway) that requires a server room to be enclosed in FR. Server rooms are not on the list of special fire hazards within ADB. I understand that from a business continuity point of view it may be of benefit but I dont think it is a requirement for life safety. Your thoughts please.
