Does anyone have experience with sprinklers in care homes? It’s hoped by the care provider that once installed, they will be able to take the door retainers off the individual rooms, my thoughts are that they will not be able too as there is still a smoke spread risk. Would I be correct or has anyone experienced an FSO agreeing with the removal of door retainers? I would imagine someone in Scotland or Wales where sprinklers are now compulsory might have some experience of this. Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi Tom, I hope you will be able to help me. I'm trying to find fire and H&S regulations on the entrance door to my flat. It's a converted house that currently has 2 self-contained flats - there is a front door into a communal hall with 2 doors - mine leads to the GFF and the neighbour's leads to the 1st floor flat via the stairs. Both doors open outside, i.e. into the communal hall. The neighbour says it's against fire regulations and doors should open into flats, but I can't find the regulations to check. Can you please help. many thanks

Hello, I woke up today and noticed someone had put a lit cigarette through my letterbox which defused on the carpet luckily, i don't know if this was a case of mistaken house or just a random moron, either way i'm treating it very seriously. :( I wanted to find an inexpensive solution to prevent this resulting in a fire if it happens again, I'm on a budget and looked at fireproof mats and such but they are quite expensive, would anyone happen to know a cost effective solution to prevent a fire being caused by a lit cigarette through the letterbox, I suppose I need something like a cage with fireproof mat inside or something like a rug that extends a long way? …

Clearing the house of a deceased relative I tried to donate a modern riser recliner bariatric chair built to very high specifications to a charity. When they came to look at it they could not locate fire labelling. I am in a quandary - it's less than 3 years old - the person who saw it confirmed it was built to the highest standards. I am at a loss - will it have to be thrown away - it would be a terrible waste

I was recently on a Fire Door assessors course where we were informed that FD30 technically no longer exists and that all 30 minute rated doors are now FD30S. If this is the case can you point me to the relevant regulation etc. please? Many thanks Michael

a young man buys a bungalow for his mother who has dementia. He provides accommodation for two other non related people and charges them a rent. He approaches a company to provide care assistants around the clock for all three tenants. (Supported living) Does the care provider have any responsibility to its workers for fire safety i.e. safety in the workplace? if a fire did occur, and resulted in a fatality. how would the fire service view it? would they treat it as a fire in a domestic premises? or a fire in a HiMO? I know there are a number of questions and they have all probably been asked before but it still seems unclear to me.

I live in a ground floor flat that opens on to a communal garden. It is a two storey block. I have been told that I need to replace my front door with an FD30 fire door. I am in process of getting quotes but need to find out if I need to have an internal closer. I have tried to find out from The housing association who are the freeholder but they are useless for following up queries. Can anyone help with this and clarify if this is a requirement. Thanks

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, however, I am wondering if anyone is able to provide some clarification on the following point. We're currently designing a play area which, when looking at Approved Document B volume 2, falls under the "Assembly and Recreation" classification. This classification seems to have quite an impact on both the surface classification of materials and the fire insulation and integrity of the external wall build up. The development is greater than 5m in height but less than 18m, and has walls that are within 1000mm of a relevant boundary. Some of these boundaries are adjoining an existing building within the same ownersh…

Hi we are in the process of purchasing a house. We wanted to convert a study into a bedroom. But an architect thought that fire regulation would not meet with this project and that this could not be done. Where could I ask for reassurance? Indra

Hi I wonder if someone can help. We have a riser cupboard which is a solid brick shaft running through all storeys within the building. Necessary fire stopping has been done however part of the riser is cladded with plywood, I understand that this area should provide 30mins of fire resistance. Is it ok to have it lined with Plywood with the solid brick wall being in place behind this? Thanks for your help

Hello good people I`m fishing for expertise here regards storage of aerosols, the type of cans like car spray paints, varnishes and silly string. Have a customer that has a warehouse with approx 10 boxes on the racking shelf, 6 can p/box so 60 cans, my advice when storing aerosols is in a separate fire protected cupboard, cabinet or very least a mesh cage, away from other combustibles and sources of heat or direct sunlight, my concerns are flammable projectiles as a consequence of being involved in any fire outbreak, apparently, they have had a H&S adviser visit who has told them it`s ok to store on the racking shelves in the open ?? I have requested a storage …

Hello. I have several 'bone' handled table knives that were handed down by my parents. I think they were purchased in the 1930's. Last night I had cooked my supper (gas oven on Mk 6) and about five minutes after turning the oven OFF I had popped my plate back into the oven to keep it warm while speaking on the phone. Also on the plate was my 'bone' handled knife. After about 2 minutes the knife handle spontaneously burst into a mass of flame and completely burnt out in a few minutes. I kept the oven door closed and the fire went out. I now believe the handle could have been made of Xylonite (which is based I believe on cellulose nitrate). I have now read that th…

Hi all I`d be interested know your thoughts on any difference between a Warden and a Marshal, to me, Warden was always a Marshal, Marshal was a Warden, however, seen a few post`s where as others say in their business that a Warden does checks/ sweep/ etc and the Marshal directs the Wardens and takes roll call at assembly point?

I live in a 1979 purpose build block of 4 flats, where we share a communal area. There's two flats upstairs and two downstairs. The owners are members of the management company that owns the leasehold. I'm aware that the management company is required by law to complete a fire risk assessment. One of the stipulations in the current regulations is to install fire doors. Do the current regulations apply retrospectively, and require us to change the front door of each flat to a fire door?

Hi everyone I hope I've come to the right place for advice. I live in a housing trust property. I've been enquiring with them about having a cat flap installed in one of my double glazed window panels. They've actually emailed me to say they won't grant permission as a cat flap "compromises the fire safety and security of the property." I suspect they've played Chinese whispers internally from my original phone call and they think I want to install it in a door somehow. I am prepared to destroy their lack of reasoning. The main point is fire safety. I've searched and read various documents around fire safety in communal properties. The fire safety…
