Hi, I have recently purchased an ottoman I wish to reupholster and sell on (I have a small space in an antiques shop). The ottoman is after the 1950 date and so is subject to fire regulations. I understand the need for a fire label. However, there is so much information online stating you need a fire label. How do you actually do it?! Nobody seems to know. Do I just buy the fire safety labels from online and put a random number on that applies to me! (I highly doubt this is the case). However, I have no idea what I practically have to do in order to be able to sell goods. Any information would be appreciated!

I know that some companies such as Jalite will make vinyl or plastic inserts for illuminated fire exit boxes so that you can replace the signage without having to replace the whole box, but I can't seem to find anywhere that sells plastic or vinyl inserts that have the version of the running man signage with the flames behind it like this: Is there anywhere willing to do this such as Jalite if I ask, or would I need to get an emergency bulkhead light like the one below an stick signage like that above onto it?

In our school we currently have all Euro signage (apart from two new external classrooms that have a single British sign each). Ideally we'd be using the British standard but it isn't possible to swap out the signage on our emergency lighting units, so we're sticking with the Euro standard until we're told they have to be changed. I've noticed a lot of the signs around school use down arrows, both for final exit signs and for straight on. My understanding is that straight on should be an up arrow and final exit signs should not have an arrow on. Is that correct? I'm having difficulty finding Euro signs with no arrows on. I can change some of the signage because they …

We are in the process of making sure that all our routes to exits/fire exits have the correct signs to conform to regulations. Please can you advise if the signs with the word Fire exit, an arrow and a running man are only to be used to direct to a dedicated fire exit? Should other routes to exits that are used on a daily basis but which would also be used to exit in the case of a fire have signs with just the word Exit, an arrow and a running man? Thank you

Hi, I've just been appointed as the responsible person in a new company I've joined, primarily because I have ran supermarkets & licensed establishments before & dealt with fire safety there. Saying that tho' the regulations appear to be very different when applied to a low risk office with less than 20 able bodied employees I'm discovering. My question is, do all internal fire doors leading to the final fire exit need to be signed as Fire Doors, Keep Shut? The fire doors have self closures and lead to a stairwell which leads to the final fire exit, which is also the main door for entering & exiting the building, the stairwell would count as a place of com…

I am struggling to fully understand what signs need to be where? Should doors from low occupancy offices be marked as 'Fire Exit'? Should doors to low occupancy areas be marked 'Fire escape keep clear'? I believe in the past the signs have been put up in good faith but it now doesn't give a consistant message. Who can I speak to or go to for GOOD advice our current Fire Risk Assessment provider hasn't helped! Alan

we are owners/landlords of a recently refurbished office building and i note that we have to display both Fire Action signs and do not use lift signs in accordance with BS5499. THE QUESTION IS THIS___ ARE WE ALLOWED TO DISPLAY THESE SIGNS IN MONO COLOUR? I note that all of the signs that you can buy on line are blue/red/yellow/green which aesthetically does not match the buildings style.

Hi, Can you please tell me what the recommended height that a fire evacuation sign should be placed ? (if it exists) I notice that many are placed at head height - but I would have thought that lower to the ground would be better because in a fire the smoke rises and therefore people evacuating could well be down at floor level - so it would seem better to place them nearer the ground. Any advice would be appreciated

Can anyone tell me if Fire Extinguisher ID Signs are needed above every extinguisher?. Could you also point me in the direction of any specific legislation that says this. I am aware the the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order states in 13.-(1) (b) any non-automatic fire fighting equipment so provided is easily accessible, simple to use and indicated by signs. Indicated by signs....., could this just be a fire point sign? or could the extinguisher act as its own sign. I cant find anywhere where it states that extinguisher specific signs are needed above every extinguisher.

I am led to believe that writing on Fire Exit Signs should start with an upper case letter an the remainder to be lower case to conform with BS5499 and disability legislation, other examples show all the letters in upper case, which is correct?

We now have one standard for safety signs which includes fire safety and fire exit signs and it is an International (ISO) European (EN) and British (BS) Standard, BS EN ISO 7010:2012. It is envisaged The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations will be amended soon and the new signs will become law and the so called euro-sign will be no more. It appears anybody with BS 5499 pt 4 signs will conform to the new standard.
