Fire Safety Signage

  1. Started by Dirk Pitt,

Dotted around a Hospital are A4 size plans of where the fire exit routes and fire exits are. Do these need to be accurate? When I look at them, they are upside down and left to right is also the wrong way. No matter where I am on the plan, I expect what is above my location on the plan to be in front of me and what is below me, is behind me. Is this how the plan should be? Currently I can not stand and orientate myself to match the A4 sign and the actual layout of corridors etc. I am not trained but what little common sense I have, tells me this is wrong and the plans should be accurate in respect of where corridors and fire exits etc are and t…

We have recently had an external Fire Door RA carried out and we have a couple of leaf and a half doors and have Fire Door Keep Shut (FDKS) signs on both sides of the main door - the assessor stated that we needed them also on the 1/2 leaf (on both sides) - is this absolutely necessary?

  3. Hi, can anyone confirm if the text has to be white on a fire door keep shut sign? I keep seeing them with silver text, but I think in the The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 it says the lettering needs to be white? Or it might of been in the Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996. Anyone have some clear guidelines to this? Kind Regards....

Hi I am just wondering if you need assembly point signs for residential buildings operating a stay put evacuation procedure. I am having conflicting messages, Some say if it’s stay put you don’t need an assembly point, some say no for low rise and medium rise. Only high rise. Some say if the fire service decide you need to evacuate that people need to know where to congregate. Particularly if EVAC alert systems are in place. But also stay put is not mandatory so people may decide to evacuate and need somewhere to gather. Any advice and also where is this stipulated.

Hi Can anyone offer any advice? We now have to assemble during an evacuation down the road from our office building on a tarmac area outside a flat. The only place visible from the front of the building on which to put the assembly point sign at a visible height, was on the lamp post but because there is already a traffic sign on the lamp post the County Council won't permit it. Our building managing agent say a sign in the lobby pointing to the direction of the assembly point will suffice but I'm not convinced that will suffice. Can anyone offer any advice. The only other alternative is to try and locate the landlord of the flat we stand in front of to see if t…

Good evening. Please can you advise if it is okay to place a fire exit sign with a downward arrow above a doorway to indicate that the fire exit route is through the door or is that just to indicate downstairs? Also if the front door of a building is being used as a fire escape can we use a green exit sign or does it need to say Fire Exit? kind regards, Karen

Hi Looking for some advice on where to locate fire exit signage. There is no room to place the signs above the doors or suspended from the ceiling due to clearance height issues. Only option is to place the signage on the wall either left or right of the door. My question being, if I for example mounted the sign to the left of the door would the exit arrow need to be pointing forward, or would the arrow need to point to the right (as its mounted to the left of the door)? Also I have some instances of doors that are 2.7m in height which exceeds the recommended mounting height above doors as stated in BS5499. Am I able to mount higher than the recommended height i…

Occasionally I see fire exit directional signage showing conflicting information (see photo) I usually suggest that the distance to ultimate safety in both directions should be sourced and then the nearest route signposted but some colleagues are telling me its okay to have conflicting info...any thoughts?

Trying to get a definitive answer for a report on several hundred fire doors which all have signs (Fire Door Keep Locked) and so on that are 42mm in diameter (blue area) these where pre attached to metal door sets when installed 10 years ago. BS5499-5 states 60mm, which is superseded by BS EN ISO 7010 which states 70mm and I'm being told by "professionals" it is 80mm. Who is right? Thanks

  11. I am struggling to find any regulatory requirement for 'Fire Action Notices' I find the whole concept of installing them by manual call points impractical as most MCPs are on the approach to staircases (or within staircases), in corridors, or at final exits - not the best place for staff or anyone to stop and read them at their leisure - especially during an evacuation!! I believe these FAN locations are a legacy from Fire Certification - or the guides that supported the Fire Precautions Act. I am not anti FANs, but have adopted a more pragmatic approach and place FANs in lifts, above urinals and on the back of toilet doors - places where by necessity - people…

Good morning, I hope you are safe and well. Our Fire maintenance company has been 'taken over' by another company and they have been out to our premises to undertake the fire maintenance/services. However, the list they have given us to replace items or to buy new things is huge... which is why I'm asking for help. I have tried to investigate and understand that we may be 'missing' some signs (unsure why our last fire maintenance company didnt point this out to us)... but the prices the new company have quoted as are so high!? eg, £19.95 for 1 sign - that I can find on a site for £10.90. anyway... please can anyone help with the below que…

  13. My job involves the specifying of fire door signage for new doorsets and one anomaly is what to use when working with pairs of doors where each leaf has a different operation. The legislation is clear in determining the type of sign for the 'door' but less so when the 'doors' are not identical. Here's what I do, would appreciate any feedback: Equal pairs with identical characteristics are simple - signage should be the same on each door, 'Fire Door Keep Shut', Fire Door Keep Locked' or 'Automatic Fire Door Keep Clear' (to suit). It's typical to see '...Locked' signs to the corridor/visible side only. There is some advice suggesting that 'Automatic Fire Door Keep Clea…

I need to purchase additional Fire Exit signage for a block of flats. The current signs a self adhesive but I'll have been informed that I should be using hard plastic which must be screwed to the wall. Could I please ask you to confirm which type I may use? Thank you for your help.

There is a cupboard behind which are all the electrics for the block of flats I live in.The door has now been replaced with a new fire door and a sign Fire Door Keep Locked is in place.Should a Danger of Death sign also be in place as there was one before the new door was hung.

  18. Hi there, I work at university and just making sure that our signs are legal. Around half our Fire exit signs are illuminated and many are not, it woud appear to be that they have not been maintained. Please see examples of attached images. I'm no expert but keen to learn little more around all aspects of fire safety. Are these lights classed as Sustained? And what's the difference to non sustained if I'm using the right terminology.. Many thanks Kevin

How many exits do you provide signs for? Just the primary route? I work mainly I schools and have been told to only put signs on the primary routes, however if this route is blocked I don't know how a visitor would know the secondary route. But then if I sign a secondary route this may be confusing! There are normally plans available, but these only show the primary routes, however I'm not sure if anyone would read them in an emergency. I have checked BS9999 and Building regs B, but can't seem to find it.

Hi there, I was wonderign if you cangive me some advice, as there is an professional disagreement where the majority of my team believe that the "EURO SIGNS" are the the only legal and acceptable fire escape signage to use.But I am arguing that the BS 5499 accepts the Sgnage with text "fire exit" ans this is legal and acceptable. Can you please advise? It's about 15 - 1 at the moment. So I need definitive advice!!!!

Hi There, I am an architectural assistant for a station redevelopment project. Across the station we have some issues regarding two different signs being installed too close to each other. One sign is "Fire door keep shut sign" and the other is a prohibition "No authorised access" sign. Is there a guideline or recommendation for the distance to be kept between the two signs above ? Now that the UK is about to leave the EU, even if the EU hasn't replaced the fire exit signage directive with the iso 7010 one, what are the chances the UK during the repeal of various laws will amend the 1996 legislation so that the euro signage will be no more?

There is something about Fire/emergency signs that has always baffled me. The one thing you are always told NOT to do in a case of an emergency is to RUN. However, the human shape in all signs is clearly running. This can easily be adapted. I understand it may be important that the person is showing an obvious direction in movement but this can still be done without reflecting the running motion. All that needs to be done is have the body in an upright position and lower the back leg by 45 degrees. This way it will still show the forward motion but in a more calm and collect manner. Can this be taken into account?
