I intend to replace all the seats and backs etc (ie foam and covers) to my 3 piece sitting room suite, including the loose covers to the chairs and settee. The label attached to the white dust sheet stapled to the wooden framework ie the first covering, states that this cover complies with the furniture and furnishing (fire) regulations 1988, but does not include a schedule 3 interliner. The suite was purchased in 1995. Question: is this first covering up to today's regs. if not what can one do? spray something on to the first covering perhaps. Thank you. Malcolm.

Hi All I am currently completing my dissertation in fulfilment of a Building Surveying Degree at the University of Salford, the title is "Retrofitting Passive Fire Protection Systems - An Evaluation of the Effectiveness & Suitability of Technologies". As part of my research I would like to gain professionals opinions upon the guidance and legislation applicable to fire safety. I would be extremely grateful if you could spare 5 minutes of your time to complete the short 10 question survey by following the link below. All responses will be treated confidentially. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/N5L8BC6 If you have any queries, or would like to recei…

I am looking for a source of advice advice on what type of tread coverings may or may not be suitable for the treads of a spiral staircase that is the sole escape route in 3 storey blocks of flats. A vinyle specification that I have seen gave ots combustion products as carbon monoxide and hydrochloric acid and advised breathing apparatus with itd own air supplu for fire fighting. Is there any website that covers the problem ? Thanks for any suggestions.

I’m an Interior Designer and have just taken on a client who would like me to design their new spa facility which is inside a shopping precinct. This is the first time I will have designed this type of facility and I am currently researching fire safety standards & guidance the area should comply with. Would you happen to know where I could look for more specific details on the fire specification and British Standards which furnishings, fixtures and fittings will have to meet? I’d really appreciate some help getting started as I’m coming up against a minefield of conflicting advice! Kerry

W e have built an extension to our house, which includes a garage with a bedroom above. We have lined the walls and ceiling with two overlapping layers of 12.5mm plasterboard. Are we required to have a plaster skim applied over the plasterboards, in oder to obtail Building Regulations final approval? (Please note, we have already had the relevant electrical work certified by the qualified electrician, who installed it.)

Hi, I'm interested in importing hardwood furniture from Poland to be sold to public and retailers in the UK. Could you let me know what are the fireproof requirements for things like drawer chests, dining chairs, wardrobes, etc? Do I need to cover the imported furniture with some special fireproof fluid? Please advise in detail. Thank you,

Can you tell me if a doormat or flower pots are considered as a fire hazard? Are UPVC door fire rated? Do fire doors have to open outwards in main exit of flats. (4 flats - 2 ground 2 1st floor)? Is Flotex a fire risk? Building was built in the 80's I think

I have been informed by the contractor who installed Fire Door Cupboards to the electrical intake cupboards under the stairs in the communal areas that the intumescent strip is over and above regulation requirements for fire rating in that area. Please can you confirm that this is the case.

My enquiry is how do i go about finding out if the furniture, like chairs, stools, and sofas from different internet sites, have passed the furniture regulations and are suitable to put in the charity organisation. Do i enquire from the internet site I wish to purchase from?. I would be grateful for any help or information you could give me. With thanks.

I am currently working on a project renovating a building which does not have a secondary fire escape access to the 1st and 2nd floor. The stairs are timber but also have gloss painted walls etc. The main shaft we want to use fire retradent varnish on, and fire retardent paints an well as door closers on all the doors leading onto the central shaft, as well as emergency lighting. Do you know of any suppiers who supply paints and varnishes of this nature. Also, we have a Blackfriars Polyurethane water based varnish and it says it is heat resistant. Would this be plausible to use to over coat the existing varnish?

Are these products covered under General Product Safety Regulations 2005 (GPSR).Thank you, I look forward to your reply.

I am trying to find out more information about how the regulations for fire retardency for bedding might apply to prisons. At present the bedding supplied to prisoners by prisons meets the required level but there has been no requirement on prisoners who buy their own bedding to meet the same fire standards, therefore their bought bedding would meet domestic regulations. The Prison Service is now telling prisoners that the law says they must get rid of any personal bedding that does not meet crib 7 and re-purchase (at high cost) new bedding which does meet this level. Could you please tell me if there has been a recent change in the law to spur this demand, and in s…

Hello I have been recently taking a look at starting a business which involves draping commercial venues with fabric as either a temporary or permanent installation. I am looking to find out information on the types of textiles which would be suitable to do this so as to meet fire safety regulations i.e, the amount of man-made to natural fibre which makes the fabric and wether spraying the fabric with fire retardent spray over treating it is still acceptable. I have done work such as this for a company which has offered drapery as one of their services and I would really appreciate any help you could give me. I know about the installation processes i.e not covering f…

I am presently researching the possibility of getting a special seating chair made. It will be made from block foam with a vinyl cover and a base of plywood reinforced with steel. Both the foam and cover meet the required flammability testing. Therefore would the chair as a complete need to be tested? If so is this testing done at one central location or are there various test centres as I am located north west and finally are the costs standard to perform these tests?

We have extended our living space into the loft area above the garage. The toilet pipe goes through the ceiling of the garage and we need to protect the pipework from carrying flames from the garage into the toilet area. Are we allowed to place a pipe collar within the ceiling rather than on the underneath of the ceiling?
