Is there a register of accredited UK portable fire-fighting apparatus service engineers and companies (or engineers and companies that include that service)? I am the chairman of a community hall in south London, and we need a new supplier of this service. We don't intend to renew with our previous service engineers since our recent experience with them has been horrible.

I'm coming across a lot of customers who are totally unaware of their responsibilities regarding monthly visual inspections even when they have been supplied with extinguishers for many years. Is there any legal issues with offering an additional service whereby for a small fee I go along each month to their premises and undertake the visuals for them ? As well as being an additional revenue stream its a way of keeping in touch and building up a rapport with them. any comments greatly appreciated thanks

Hi I run an HMO. I have had one of the nozzles removed from a water mist fire extinguisher on one of the landings, quite an important part. Is it possible to put the extinguisher in some sort of 'clear plastic bag' with a rip cord to open - and sealed with a cable tie to stop such theft. I have 3 of these and it appears quite easy to just unscrew them by hand, I have thought of removing the rubber o ring and tightening the nut with a spanner to stop opportunist 'hand removal'. Who would have thought ! Sure this must be an issue in schools - full of mischievous kids (me once being one of them :) how do they deal with this.

Hi everyone just looking for some advice on servicing extinguishers outside of my workplace.I done the course around 3 years ago passed and have been certificated. What would I need in place if I was to service a extinguisher for a small business? Would I be covered with my certificate and a check sheet which I'll provide to business post service? Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Hi I'm looking to price up the viability of on site extinguisher servicing (3 schools) and wondered if anyone could recommend a local training provider to offer me the skills to become competent (Shrewsbury). I've looked at as much information as I can find on refilling extinguishers and the equipment costs don't throw the idea straight out of the window, but would appreciate any advice if available, pro's con's. Looking into becoming a trainer in the safe use of fire extinguishers (practical) along with a graduate qualified in Health and Safety. Found one local company ( won't give full details as would be potent advertising ) any advice, tips of any legislatio…

i have been asked to fit fire Extinguishers in a home but its a foster home. with British standards legislation saying For any story in a building with a floor area equal to or less than 400 m² there should be a minimum of 2 x class 'A' extinguishers with a minimum combined fire rating of 26A this i know for businesses and property but is a foster home, so dose the 2 x 13A rule apply to a home,

I've been asked to look at a few 360 excavators and all the 2kg powders fitted are less than two years old but none have service labels on them. Do they need annual basic services of just supply and fit and replace after 5 years ?? thanks

The term 'single occupancy' as it appears in BS5306 is causing some confusion amongst colleagues. Does it mean (a) a solitary, ie single/lone PERSON works or resides on the premises in question or ( B) a single COMPANY/BUSINESS uses the premises?

Hi All, As a newly certificated BS5306 tech I am looking for some advise please. I am coming across a number of extinguishers in premises that are relatively new and in good visual condition but have never had a commissioning service. they have no maintenance sticker at all. I think they are being bought off e bay or the internet and just hung by themselves. Question is - what do I do with them ? Do I identify when they were manufactured and give them a basic service and mark the discharge/hydraulic test date from that manufactured date or do I switch them with new and get them checked and refilled. Thanks

I have purchased a 2kg powder fire extinguisher for using it in my house. A web site says, Fire extinguishers used for business purposes must be serviced every twelve month, refilled after 5 years and overhauled after 10 years. Do I need to do the same with household extinguishers as well?
