Hello, We live in a block of 15 flats and have a communal main front door. Currently there is a door release button next to this communal door, so we can exit the building without using a key to get out. Good for getting out in an emergency situation and for every day use too.. My question is .. would a thumbturn lock on the door also be required or is the door release button sufficient? Thanks very much, George

Hello, I am currently involved in a 60 bedroom extra care new build scheme in Grimsby. There will be a small commercial kitchen with a medium size gas hob and extractor, I have been asked if a gas shut off is mandatory and also is it necessary to have some form of a deluge or suppression system above the cooking facilities? There will be a small deep fat fryer and I have already recommended a Wet Chemical, CO2 and AFFF Extinguishers and Fire Blanket. Any advice appreciated Regards Mark

Hello, I'm doing research for novel firefighting equipment and can't be too specific about the application, I'm sorry. My issue is the weight of the hose, and its contents, when in use. I need it to be as light as possible. I understand AFF is a mixture of chemicals and water, and that there are low, medium and high expansion foams. Can anyone please advise... Is the expansion due to a chemical reaction (if so, what's the gas released?) or just due to the mechanical effects of being mixed and then jettisoned from a nozzle? Where does the 'mixing' between chemicals & water, and crucially, where does the 'expansion' take place? I se…

Hello, There's a great deal of material on the internet about the toxicity to the environment of AFFs, but very little (none, that I can find), about the consequences of spraying it directly onto people. My question is, in a scenario where people are under direct threat of burning, like in an aircraft fire, is it ok to spray them with large quantities of AFF or would that cause them to die of drowning or suffocation...? ... or indeed to die later as a consequence of the exposure to toxic chemicals? Many thanks for any contributions...

Tom, Referring to your remarks on door mats. We have been supplied by our landlord with fire resistant ones (apparently complying with BS EN 13501), which have been placed inside the front and rear door entries. I notice however, that you state BS 5287 is the compliant for carpet. Why the difference? We approached the manufacturer, and they will not supply unless we sign up individually to a rental contract agreement, similar to the one taken out by our landlord. Why can we not use a standard non slip door mat, and treat it with a complying fire retardant spray?

I own a self-contained top floor flat in a Victorian house converted many years ago. From my flat there is access to a flat roof connected with the other house in the terrace. I would like to have a system in place allowing automatically those downstairs to come through my flat and up the roof in the event of fire. Does it exist a "smart lock" (connected or not to an alarm system) or any other product that could be installed on the my flat's front door to achieve this? Many thanks in adavnce

Hello, I need some advice on cleaning up after a fire. All the soft furnishings, clothes, carpets etc smell strongly of smoke. Obviously the clothes can be washed, but is it sufficient to air items like sofas and mattresses or is something more needed? Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks, Catherine

Hi all I hope this is the right section to post this in. I was wondering if anyone had information on the FM200 system regarding guidelines / processes AFTER it has discharged. In particular, I am wondering what the recommended wait time is following a discharge of the system, before you can reenter the room. We are looking at creating a set of guidelines for in-house, and having a prescribed waiting period seems logical. I have found numerous articles etc on the net, but nothing that addresses this. Additionally, are there any other recommendations or guidelines on procedures following the system discharging. Thank you

We are installing a completely new shower facility on a site in Halifax. The nearest mains fed water supply is a 50mm supply to a Fire hose reel. Do the fire regulations allow us to tap into this supply to provide the feed for the showers? Regards

I bought a Honeywell EzSense gas detector for flammable gases. It did not detect a gas leak in my cooker which has now been condemned by the gas authorities. I bought this product because I thought I could smell a very faint smell of gas. It failed to detect a leak and in the end I called out the gas authorities who found a leak in my cooker. I now have a new cooker, but I have wasted my money on the detector. Is it faulty? Liz
