Smoke seals for double action fire doors

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am an architect and am looking for a double, double action, floor-sprung, doorset (swings both ways), FD30 that is has a certified smoke seal all around.

Am having a job finding this arrangement for any suppliers, with the smoke seal part being the problem.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks

Check out http://www.firesafe.org.uk/fire-doors/ and there are links to TRADA Q-Mark fire door scheme and British Woodworking Federation Certifire fire door scheme they may be able to help.

hello - is it possible to have fire doors that can swing both ways?

Yes there are available double swing fire doors which uses specialised hinges and closers. A fire door closer used with double swing doors should not only close the door but also hold it firmly in the closed position. It needs to be strong enough to keep the door closed against any pressure to which the door leaf may be subjected in a fire. The only type of device which has been shown to be successful is a spring type mounted in the sill.

What is the maximum allowable gap between the two leaf at that case to comply with NFPA 80?

This is a UK site and we do not usually deal with North American standards and I would be surprised if anybody could help you, but you never know.

Are swing doors recommended at the base of a protected staircase?

Fire doors will be required to provide fire and smoke compartmentation. What exactly do you mean by 'swing'? Fire doors up to FD60s can be single action or double action.

My customer has a large doorway in a listed building the original door was taken down and now needs a firedoor to replace

It's in a hotel so they have asked if there is such a thing as a saloon style door consisting of two doors hung on hinges as normal but swing both ways meeting in the middle is this allowed or such thing exist..

It would be called a 'double-swing action' fire door. The door would be hinged on pivots with a floor mounted spring (floor spring) so that the doors self-close and centre correctly.

Would a double action double fire door within a fire exit corridor require to have smoke seals ?

I.e FD30 s ??

If so, how can smoke seal be achieve due to nature of closing (floor mounted closer )

Yes the doors across escape corridors are smoke stop doors to ensure you do not have to travel more than 18 m in smoke conditions, check out ARCHITECTURAL AND SPECIALIST DOOR MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION BEST PRACTICE GUIDE TO TIMBER FIRE DOORS section 14 Smoke control door seals.
