Our block of flats was recently equipped with emergency lighting.  The cabling - not a mineral insulated type - was secured to the ceiling with nailed in cable clips.  Straight sections were enclosed in rectangular plastic trunkling, but the bends were left exposed.  Naturally, the result looks dreadful.  Is it permissible to remove the plastic trunking and paint the cabling to match the ceiling?

Is the luminaires self contained or central batteries and is the cabling fire resistance is doesn't need to be MICC cable there are other fire resistance wire.

As long as the cables remain metal clipped in place it shouldn't be an issue. EL cable doesn't need to be fire resistant unless part of a central battery system (not seen much these days)

Many thanks for your replies.  The lights are supplied from the mains and an electrician has just confirmed that the cables can be painted, so we have our solution.

It is best answered by an electrician who should be familiar with theThe 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018) as it is unlikely to be covered by BS 5266-1.
