Should emergency lights show a green or red light?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm currently working on some day centers and have been doing some monthly maintenance and have noticed that most of the emergency lighting fittings have no light indication and some do varying with green and red indicate,,,

Would I have to kill main power to see if working or not 🤷‍♂️🙋

They should be being tested monthly to check function in any case to comply with guidance to the fire safety legislation. In correctly installed emergency lighting installations you have test key points that cut the mains supply to the emergency lights, putting them into battery mode so you can test if they are functional in a power failure

In poorly installed or older installations you have to trip the lighting circuits to test the fittings (not ALL power).

The little lights on each fitting are for daily external visual checks, the steady green LED means the mains supply to the fitting's charger is on - if it is steady red then it's just a very old fitting (they used to be red not green). Flashing red would indicate it's a self testing fitting that has failed the test, but these are not common.

No LED means the fitting is completely dead & non functional and needs replacement.
