A recent fire service risk visit highlited that doors to assisted bathrooms (with electrical hoist fitted) leading onto an escape coridoor require self closing devices fitted. This appears to be getting more common accross different fire services, although not highlited as a risk in the FRA. Obviously we are abiding by their decision and also fitting intamescent smoke seals too.

They didn't mention on their report, but if they regard these as a risk, should this require smoke detectors as keeping to L1 Catagory as BS 5839 do not require unless in public bathroom/toilets? I'm concerned of unwanted alarms, but if the FB say these bathrooms create a fire risk then sureley such risk warrents early detection?

I can see the reasoning behind the advice; the hoist places a risk within the bathroom.

Are they happy with the door to the bathroom? Is it a fire door?

Smoke detectors should not be installed in bathrooms or within 900 mm of the door as the steam and humidity may cause false alarms or long-term damage to the internal electronics. I would look at heat detectors.
