Evacuation Plans

Good Afternoon, I wonder if you would be able to assist or point me in the right direction. I need to understand the current legislations surrounding evacuating mobility impaired staff in the office. I do not have an evac chair as the bilding is only 3 floors high (including ground) and our stairwells are fire safe for 2 hours. In the event of an evacuation I would buddy a disabled person and ensure their safe access to the stairwell where I would presume after notifying the fire department they would proceed to resuce. Is this correct procedure or are we as a company expected to always have an evac chair or carry staff out of the building? regards Sarah

I wish to know if a walkie talkie can be used instead of a refuge call point, i have an issue with someone planning to use these housed in a box in a stairwell refuge point, i believe a propoer call point should be installed but i need some guidance as to what is legally acceptable. Thank you in advance.

Is there minimum gap between items of furniture to enable escape from an office area. For some reason I thought the minimum gap was 1m. The question is not about the actual fire escape corridor but the the notional path to the corridor.

Hi! I am looking for guidance to give staff when evacuating our office. I would like to allow people to take their laptops with them as this is critical to our resiliency plans. I want to advise, "IF SAFE TO DO SO, undock and go: do not shut down or finish work - sling the bag over your shoulder to keep hands free." Some people are saying that the law says take no belongings and there's no room for interpretation. I believe that just as ladies are allowed to take pocketbooks/ purses people can take a laptop bag and allow for a safe evacuation whilst having common sense rule the day (e.g. we don't prohibit people taking a jacket if it's cold/raining).

I was advised recently that in a fire evacuation situation, assembly point roll calls are no longer required, but that fire wardens are allocated areas to carry out a sweep to ensure that all employees have evacuated the building. They then report to the fire service on arrival on areas which have been "swept" or not. This is so that the fire service can target areas where potentially it is known where there may be personnel unaccounted for ?

I am looking for some advice please. I am the Secretary of an 80 strong local choir. We hire a community hall for our rehearsals. Do we legally have to have a register to know who is on the premises to comply with any fire regulations? Your advice would be much appreciated.

Hi - hopefully you may be able to offer me some advice or point me in the right direction. Part of my business provides domiciliary care to a range of people in their own home. This can range from the care of a young child to the elderly and cover a wide variety of care needs from assistance to the administration of medicines. At some settings, our care staff and nurses are on site and provide 24 hour care in the home environment. Some families are very accommodating, however there are instances where some families create cause for concern, one of which will be around Fire Safety. Where a home does not have or refuses to have basic fire precaution such as a smoke alarm,…

In an area of a building where people are barefoot ( public swimming pool) is there any obligation on that place to provide protective footwear for evacuation to an outside assembly point away from buildings? Is the provision of overshoes or socks required?

I used to work for large company where I was a fire marshall/ floor sweeper. The rules stated that roll call was not required as floor sweepes were employed to ensure cleared areas. Staff could be anywhere on site and could go to various fire points. My new company insist on roll call against swipe card system (which is not foolproof and a list has to be printed out ) and staff may not be in office. Can you confirm actual regulations on this as I believe our current system could put fire people into danger looking for unaccounted staff. We dont sweep floors. I am not a marshall now but still concerned

Hello We have two fire exits on the ground floor of our flat. Our management firm recently chained one of them shut saying that it was entirely legal because there is one other fire exit. It was chained shut for about a fortnight, supposedly for safety during the riots and has now been removed. Please could you advise as I am a bit concerned for my own safety and that of my fellow tenants! Thanks. Joe

I am on the committee at a working mens club and in the bar the door to the car park is a fire door and has a ramp from the outside for wheelchair access. We have a number of smokers that insist on standing right by this door which is left open in the summer but closed in the winter and they say that they can smoke behind the door and I wondered if you can advise me if this doorway should be kept clear of smokers but okay to use as an access for people from the car park. Thanks June

I am seeking advice in respect of Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans. I was specifically looking for information in respect of whether we require a PEEP for every individual or will a comprehensive group evacuation plan suffice
