Covering a fire door with laminate?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Apologies if this isn't the right forum for such a message, but I need some advice on whether it is advisable or legal to cover an FD30 door with a decorative laminate covering? A client has requested this for a residential property within a set of flats. The laminates are not oil based, they are generally made from compacted paper. Fitting would otherwise be as standard with intumescent strips and paper.

If you can help shed any light on this I would appreciate your help,

Kind regards,
David

I cannot see how any laminates would affect the fire resistance of a fire door but the main concern would be the surface spread of flame and has this laminate been tested for surface spread of flame, if so what class did it achieve.

Laminate faced timber-based fire doors are available from many fire door suppliers. Sometimes this is for decorative purposes and sometimes for impact protection in which case edge protection and frame protection products are also available.
