in Smoke Alarms

Early this morning our smoke alarm start to beep once every 40 seconds so as before, I followed procedure to replace the Duracell battery. After doing so however, the alarm now beeps once a second along with the flashing red light. I can't find any reference to this in user manuals or trouble shooting. Any ideas please?
