This photo is from a ceiling of a twenty year old home can't quite make out what kind of sensor it is, has anyone come across this before?

No, and if it was meant to be a smoke or fire detector it looks too flush to work.

I've asked on a specialist forum & will get back to you if I find out more.

Thank for that, could it be a sensor for air conditioning? The property has a rather extensive ducted air system.

No one in the fire alarm trade so far can identify it so it's not fire related - sensors for alarms or environmental systems were some of the guesses.
