Do Flat front doors with a shared brick porch need to be Fire Doors

Featured Replies

Hi, Could anyone advise whether the front doors to two flats need to be fire rated doors. The property is a terraced, brick built house converted into two flats - upstairs and downstairs. The front doors for both flats sit in a small brick porch. There are no other communal areas and the porch is open fronted, i.e. there is no door or windows to the outer wall. The doors have glass in them and a glass panel above them. Because they are standard upvc doors and right next to each other the property management company is now saying they should be changed to fire doors. Just seems excessive for porch that you cross in two steps. Does this sound necessary to you?

Probably yes. It all depends on whether the porch forms part of the common escape route serving both flats.  A flat entrance door that opens onto a common escape route should be a FD30 standard as they are part of the compartment strategy.

It is all a question of how the original design treated the porch, you need to request more information from the FRA and the fire strategy drawing
