Small Service Corridor - Fire Detection?

Featured Replies

Hi

I have visited a small retail park with 5 small units.

Units 1 and 2 only (currently combined to form 1 unit with 1 occupier) have access to a small service corridor to the rear (other tenants have front entrance and rear fire exits direct to air).

There is emergency lighting and an electrical cupboard with the DB and meters for all units.

The service corridor is about 8m long and has 2 exit doors direct to air. The doors from the units are FD30S and in reasonable condition.

There is a redundant fire alarm system in place (1 SD and 2 MCPs that were linked to a former occupier of the 2 units), however this appears to have been redundant for a while now - it was not a stand-alone system.

Does this service corridor require any fire detection and warning? Seems a little overkill due to the size.

The retail occupiers have MoE via the front exit doors which are likely to fall within the required travel distances for single direction MoE.

Many thanks

What risk of unnoticed ignition is there?
What combustibles are present?
Would it compromise escape if allowed to grow beyond the early stages undetected?
Is the corridor and the units around it constructed such as to be classed as separate compartments as oppose to just a protected route?

Sometimes you need something, sometimes you don't. As you answer the questions you'll soon lean towards the appropriate answer!
