Fire escape for wheelchair user

Featured Replies

hello

i'm waiting for are house to be adapted for wheel chair use but i'm in the down stairs dining room and there is only one window and one door straight on to kitchen. I would not be able to exit bed room in a fire as I can not jump out of a window etc and have a large family sleeping up stairs. W are a family of six. Is there any laws that housing association needs to adhere to? Many thanks

The Disability Discrimination Act and the the Equality Act 2010 are the are the two pieces of legislation that apply to you regarding your situation. It appears the only only part that applies to your landlord is they must consider, any application from you, to modify the premises. As you are about have your house adapted for wheel chair use then this permission must have been given.

There is no way I could comment on the means of escape without a lot more information and a survey. However you could contact your local Fire and Rescue Service for a home check and they would be able to advise you accordingly.

There are a number of possible strategies for making a workplace's fire safety arrangements easier for the disabled to use. One of these is, having visual ways of alerting hearing-impaired staff that an evacuation is underway
