I am presuming your husband has taken part in some form of fire drill either as a drill or information on how the office should be evacuated in the event of a fire. If he has not received this training he should request it. It is a breach of the regulatory reform order if he has not received any fire safety training .

Even if this house is legal I would suggest that you think through your escape from it in the event of a fire. You may need to have a portable fire escape ladder to enable you to exit an upstairs window should the front door or stairs be blocked by a fire. It is important to remember that in the event of a fire most people panic, if you have not thought of how you are going to get out beforehand your panic may get the better of you. I would also suggest that you make sure the house has adequate smoke alarms and extinguishers installed. If you are not sure what you need or how you should best exit your house in the event of a fire, you can ask your local fire brigade to give you some advice. They will make a free home visit usually.

I would suggest that if your alarm does go off that you open windows and get air circulating through the house. It is always best to call the gas board as soon as possible. Some friends had the same issue, being woken in the night by the co alarm. They did call the gas board instantly and there was a high level of co present due to a faulty boiler. Had they not acted so quickly they may not have woken in the morning. My tip would be always err on the side of caution.
