Installation of extinguishers

Featured Replies

We are extending part of the house and are letting bedrooms for holiday guests. We were told that we have to install a couple of extinguisher. No problem so far. But one of the companies we rung insisted that we had to get them installed by them and that it would be illegal to install ourselves. What is the difference of me hanging an extinguisher on the wall compared to a 'specialist'???

The new BSI standard for extinguisher installation does make it necessary to pay somebody knowledgeable for the art of installing and commissioning. However, who says that you need to follow BSI's guidance. After all BSI standards are mainly voluntary guides. If you are a private individual you do not need to install in accordance to BSI at all. If you are a business or rent out etc your insurance might tell you how these extinguishers are to be installed installed.

If you decide to do the install yourself, just weigh the extinguisher, record the weight, keep the invoice, check that nothing is bent or dented and that the pressure gauge is in the green. And then just ring a servicing company after one year to service (if you are a business or have to do fire risk assessments). If you are a business and you install yourself, just make sure you know how many extinguishers are needed and where they are to be installed.

I agree, installing them correctly is not rocket science!! Also, I would suggest that you shop around when buying them as some Fire Extinguisher suppliers in my opinion charge an absolute fortune! For example, a standard 2kg CO2 can be purchased on line for around £30 but some companies are charging upwards of £200 to supply and fix! Ouch!
