is a strong salt solution enough to fire proof curtains? Or do you need to pay for flame retardant chemicals?

I don't think you could ever pickle your curtains enough to make them fire proof. It surely would leave nasty stains!
Impregnation sprays are quite cheap, some are suitable for washing, even.
